And introduce them to others because you just never know!
Last year during one of San Francisco’s wintry summer days, the Success Center SF had what they were calling a “Friendraiser” at Pier 23. It’s a take on a fundraiser where you bring your friends to introduce them to Success Center. Along with my husband, Joel, I took along one of my fellow American Marketing Association Board of Directors’ members, Gene Felipi to Pier 23. Gene and Joel had a chance to meet some of the SCSF staff and students and heard Liz Jackson-Simpson talk about the work the Center does.
Fast forward to May 2016 – Gene got an email inquiry from Don Marek, one of his colleagues from the Marketing Research Association where Gene has been a long time member. Don heads up the Market Research Education Fund and asked Gene if he knew of a local San Francisco charity that helped educate disadvantaged youth. The MRA was planning its annual Corporate Conference in San Francisco at the end of September and wanted to award a local deserving non-profit with a $5,000 grant. Well, Gene immediately remembered Liz’s talk at the Friendraiser last year and called me and asked me to follow-up with Don. As you can imagine, I jumped at the opportunity!
After many phone calls and emails with Gene, Don and Liz, SCSF’s application was submitted to the MREF board for consideration. In early September Don notified me that the Board had agreed to award the grant to the Success Center San Francisco at their annual Conference at the St. Francis Hotel on September 28th.
Liz graciously accepted the grant and made a very eloquent and moving speech about the work SCSF does with youth. Many members of the audience came up to her afterwards to find out more about the Success Center and to congratulate her for winning the grant.
If Gene had not remembered the Friendraiser I invited him to last year the Success Center would never have received this generous donation. Thank you, Gene! Thank you Don! And thank you to all of the professionals at the Market Research Association who contributed to the Education Fund!
