Job Description:
The Assistant Construction Instructor is responsible for the education and hands-on-training program for4 participants in basic carpentry to prepare them for entry-level jobs in the construction trades. This position will assist the lead instructor with introductory training, administering the MC3 curriculum and constructing a tiny house, from start to finish including: electrical work, framing, dry wall and the ability to instruct in the “Green/Environmental Literacy aspects of construction such as weatherization, solar, deconstruction and recycling. The ideal candidate will have the ability to instill strong ethics, values and sense of self-esteem with individuals who face many social and employment barriers and provide a positive role model through his/her actions, behaviors and accountability.
Responsibilities:
- Instruct participants in basic aspects of construction as identified by MC3 curriculum.
- Assist in the teaching of construction skills including but not limited to demolition, rough framing, roofing, drywall, finish carpentry, sheet metal, electrical, plumbing, painting, and masonry
- Track knowledge of each trainee’s presence and work capabilities and skills
- Coordinate individual plans for participants with YouthBuild staff
- Teach the proper use and handling of all hand tools, power tools, and equipment and administer safety exam
- Maintain inventory of tools, material and ordering of supplies
- Assist with maintenance of site/building
- Coordinate and review curriculum and trainee’s participation with team in weekly meetings.
- Attend all required meetings
- Supervise job sites authorized to perform work related to training
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications/Requirements:
- Detail-oriented and thorough
- Ability to operate basic tools or equipment used in construction functions
- Ability to keep assigned unit(s) clean and orderly
- Knowledge of safety hazards and proper use of various cleaning and sanitizing solutions
- Ability to learn and utilize technology and technology equipment, as appropriate
- Ability to interact with staff and community, while remaining professional, polite, and courteous
- Strong customer service skills
- Respects and has knowledge of cultures, ethnicities, gender, sexual orientations and age groups other than one’s own, able to work effectively with all.
- Flexible and a self-starter; able to multi-task while also being highly detailoriented.
- Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a commitment to Success Centers mission.
- Strong organizational, interpersonal and supervisory skills.
- Commitment and ability to work alongside diverse, economically disadvantaged individuals.
- Must be able to work as a team member and in a team environment
- Minimum of Five (5) years’ experience in Construction Trade.
- Vocational teaching credential preferred (or ability to become certified)
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods standing.
- Must be able to lift, bend, stoop, climb, reach, and lift up to 50 pounds at a time
