Organizational Overview:
Success Centers (SC) is a non-profit corporation founded in 1983 by Superior Court Judges who saw the need to improve the educational and vocational outcomes for the youth engaged with the juvenile justice system. Since then SC has grown to provide comprehensive workforce development, education, and arts services to youth and adults who face multiple barriers to career development. SC envisions a vibrant and just society that inspires individual transformation and understands the key role that workforce development plays in creating meaningful and productive lives. Success Centers has become an $8 million organization, with a 10-person Board of Directors and multiple locations in San Francisco, Oakland, and San Mateo Counties.

Position Overview:
The Director of Philanthropy serves as the principal fundraising manager for the agency. He or she is responsible for the oversight, planning and implementation of a comprehensive fundraising program that secures significant financial resources from individuals. S/he manages all individual donor functions, which include major gifts, major events and ‘friendraisers’, planned giving, donor prospecting and research, and special one or multi-year fundraising campaigns. The Director of Philanthropy reports to the Chief Operating Officer and may supervise technical staff and/or fundraising volunteers.

Job Tasks:
Specific responsibilities include:
Individual Fundraising

  • Implements an annual campaign and other fundraising efforts that focuses on 200 donors through social media, direct mail, peer-to-peer, and other solicitation and outreach
  • Supports the CEO, Board of Directors and Fun(d) Committee with major donor cultivation and solicitation by providing necessary plans, progress tracking, materials and donor information
  • Conducts ongoing donor research and is responsible for the management of donors and for increasing the organization’s prospects


  • Implements and manages all aspects of the annual gala, which is the organization’s main fundraising event, including logistics, pre-and-post event communications, event software platforms, program format, speakers, fundraising and all venue, vendor and day-of logistics
  • Supports the CEO and Board of Directors in approximately 10 donor cultivation “friendraisers” each year, such as tours, site visits and other small engagement gatherings, including all communications, planning and follow-up
  • Manages a community engagement and donor acknowledgement event aimed at increasing awareness of the organization and celebrating the accomplishments of programs and participants


  • Works closely with the CEO, Board and Directors and Fun(d) Committee to secure annual sponsorships and partnerships for events, programs, and activities by helping to leverage networks and manage timelines and follow-up
  • Conducts prospect identification, implements cultivation, facilitates solicitation, and ensures that ongoing stewardship is taking place throughout the year
  • Ensures that recognition and acknowledgement of corporate donors are maximized, including highlighting support and opportunities in existing communications, press releases, and social media
  • Strengthens relationships with corporate partners to identify mutually beneficial opportunities


  • Tracks all individual and corporate information in the donor database, including cultivation activities, event information, and prospects
  • Generates and presents campaign and event donor reports to the CEO, Board of Directors, and Fun(d) Committee relating to progress, status and other analysis
  • Serves as organizational liaison to the Fun(d) Committee and works closely with the chair of this committee on agendas and communications to maximize the fundraising efforts
  • Collaborates with leadership staff of the organization to support all goals of Success Center’s mission
  • Works closely with the Director of Special Projects and the Communications Committee on donor related materials and communications such as the annual report and the Executive Assistant on donor acknowledgements and data-entry
  • Understands and complies with all gift-related policies and procedures for ethical compliance, as defined by the Association for Fundraising Professionals
  • Other duties as assigned


  • A minimum three years of direct or indirect fundraising experience in a nonprofit organization
  • Cultural competency: sensitivity to issues of urban youth culture, ethnicity, poverty, immigration status, homelessness, gender, gender identification and sexual orientation
  • Highly organized with relationship building, communication skills, and follow-up
  • Experience using a database to track donor information and customizing reports
  • Maintains confidentiality of frequently sensitive and emotionally charged information

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at times.
