Lonnie Tuck (Deputy Director) first met Britney Bynum at a fundraiser for Success Center SF in December of 2014. Britney indicated that she was looking build a career and was dissatisfied with the many dead end jobs that were always temporary, leading her to a cycle of unemployment. Britney (A Western Addition resident) told Lonnie that she was wanting to secure a better position for her and her son, the very next week Britney showed up at the offices at the Western Addition Career Center. Lonnie saw Britney as this young determined mother who strived to want more out of life
So, Britney sat down with staff and developed a job search game plan which focused on:
Although she did not have a medical background, Britney stated that she had a passion for working in the medical field, ideally in the environmental/housekeeping division of a medical center. We then began to identify medical centers and hospitals where Britney wanted to work. She decided that she wanted to obtain a position with SF General, Kaiser or Sutter Health. Once her plan was completed, Britney applied for a position with MGA Staffing Agency and secured a temporary position at UCSF in their housekeeping department.
After working as a temp for several months at UCSF, gaining the valuable housekeeping experience she needed to further her career, Britney began to apply for permanent housekeeping positions with CPMC. Success Center Staff kept Britney informed about job fairs and employer spotlights presented by CPMC at SCSF and Britney attended every event, making her name and face known to their recruiters. Her persistence worked and Britney was granted an interview at a CPMC through one of Success Center Employer Spotlights. Before her interview, she came to our Career Center where staff prepared her for the interview, running her through potential interview questions and giving her additional tips.
We’re happy to say Britney landed a position with Sutter Health! Her first official start date was July 27th.
