A Play by Darrell P.

CHARACTERS:

SETTING:

SAMPSON, the BOXER is scrawny, flea-infested, and has a lot of battle scars, dog, age 3 years.

PRINCESS, the Boxer, is female, 2.5 dog years, beautiful.

A high-class neighborhood with mowed lawns, big houses, and big driveways, something SAMPSON is new to because he lives in a grimy, run down alley that has a lot of old clothes and old, left-over food thrown everywhere from windows. There are also a lot of mice and rats and fleas everywhere, and there’s a disgusting foul odor.

TIME: Noon

AT RISE:

SAMPSON was just at the hot dog stand in the city, but his puppy dog look didn’t score him a hot dog today. He is now strolling through a high-class neighborhood searching for trash cans looking for left-over food when he notices the muscular/cut German Shepherd who’s been trying to get at PRINCESS ever since he moved into the neighborhood.

SAMPSON
(thinking out loud)  I know I did not just see what I just saw. No, it’s just hot out here. The sun must be making me see things that’s not really there. No, I did just see that!  That damn German think he could just move here and take what’s mine.  I don’t think so! I should just interrupt their little thing they got going on over there, but I don’t want her master to get the wrong impression of me. Princess is wrong for letting that happen, too.  I wonder: did she enjoy that? I’m going to find out for myself. I’mma just wait in the bushes by her backyard until she returns home. Then I’ll confront her.

(SAMPSON goes to PRINCESS’S house and waits in the bushes.)

SAMPSON
Oh, I feel like biting the muscle right off that German’s neck. Oh, here she comes. I have to be quiet and stop moving.

(PRINCESS enters. She walks to her dog house, takes a sip of her water, lies down on her rose-covered mattress, and thinks about what just happened.)

PRINCESS
Wow. I wonder what that was all about. I really didn’t expect that German to introduce himself that way. It was kind of rude, but he’s so damn sexy. I wanted to yell at him, but he just gave me that perfect smile and it just made me melt.  I really don’t even know him; and what would Sampson say if I told him what happened today?

(SAMPSON interrupts her thoughts with an angry bark. He’s standing by the fence.  She walks out and SAMPSON has an angry look on his face.)

PRINCESS
How are you doing, Sampson? And why are you looking at me like that? Is something wrong?

SAMPSON
Hm. Is something wrong? Yeah, something’s wrong!

PRINCESS
And what is that? And don’t yell at me anymore like that.

SAMPSON
I seen what went down between you and that I’m-too-sexy-for-myself German earlier.

PRINCESS
What, are you spying on me now or just stalking me?

SAMPSON
No, I’m not spying on you or stalking you. I was just on my way to your house to express my feelings towards you and how I really feel about you when my heart was shattered by that little incident earlier.

PRINCESS
First of all, you’re talking to me like we are a couple or something? And second, that little incident you seen earlier was not purposeful. He just came up and kissed all over me.

SAMPSON
It looked to me like you enjoyed it a lot. Do you know I never felt this love that I have for you for anyone before? That first time I laid eyes on you I knew I had to have you and you were the one for me. Have you ever heard of love at first sight?

PRINCESS
Yeah, but—

SAMPSON
Well, that’s what it was. And, Princess, you can sit here and tell me you don’t have any feelings for me, but that will be a lie, because I could see it in your eyes, Princess.

PRINCESS
Sampson, I do have feelings for you and I know what you’ve been through. No, I can’t relate to your pain and suffering, but I feel you and I feel your pain when you talk to me.  We’ve known each other for two weeks, Sampson, and I’ve known other dogs longer than that, and I don’t feel the same way about them that I feel about you. But you have to understand Sampson, that it could never work between us.

SAMPSON
Why not, Princess!? Is it the way I look, the way I talk, what! What! What is it, Princess?

PRINCESS
No, it’s none of that. There’s nothing wrong with you. It’s my master that I’m worried about. He would never accept a street dog into his household.

SAMPSON
Well, run away with me now, Princess.

PRINCESS
What?! Run away with you so I could be digging in people’s trash cans every day looking for food and not bathing in weeks. No offence, by the way.

SAMPSON
None taken. I understand, but I could make it work between us. I will find some way, if it’s the last thing I do.

PRINCESS
And what is that, Sampson? You expect me to move into that alley with you, huh? Huh?  If my master sees you he’s going to call the pound on you right away and—

SAMPSON
This is who you want, Princess?

(They see the German Shepherd approaching.)

PRINCESS
No, I don’t. I don’t even know him, like I told you before.

SAMPSON
Oh, this German just comes up here and interrupts my conversation and stands over there eyeing me like he wants problems.

PRINCESS
Sampson, don’t go there, it’s not that serious.

SAMPSON
No, it is that serious. I told you I’ll do anything to get you. I really want to have a family with you so I could be the father that I never had and raise fine children. I might not be as handsome and strong as that German, but I bet he can’t love like I can, because I grew up all alone, with no one to love me. And, to tell you the truth, I didn’t really know what love was until the day I met you.

PRINCESS
What are you doing, Sampson? No!

SAMPSON
If I have to win you, Princess, than that’s what I’m going to do. I’m going to get him out of our way.

(SAMPSON approaches the German.)

PRINCESS
Oh, no, Sampson! Don’t do this. I love you, Sampson. Don’t do this!

SAMPSON
It’s too late!

PRINCESS
No! He’s way too big for you, Sampson. He will kill you. See, how you just jumped at him and he threw you across the lawn with one strike of his front paw, and how he has a hold of your neck…oh, no! Please, stop it. PLEASE! Let go of his neck, you’re going to kill—

(The German snaps SAMPSON’S neck.)

PRINCESS
He’s dead. Why? Why did you do that? I was in love with him.

(She starts howling.)

PRINCESS
My master will come out and see this and you will be put to sleep, because you are a menace to society. I will never forgive you either. You will burn in hell for this. I feel so lost without Sampson, because I really did love him and he would have made a great father.  Rest in Paradise, Sampson.

THE END
