CHARACTERS:

MEEZ, a pine tree, age 17 FRESH, a grizzly bear, age 17

SETTING:

The Ven-esh Forest.  It is dark for 19 hours a day here, and it smells like wet soil.  You can hear the sound of water hitting the rocks from the waterfalls all the time.

TIME: An  hour before the sun comes up.

AT RISE:

FRESH walks out of his cave, mad as hell because he jus found out that his sister just died.  He wants to go talk to his boy before he goes to kill.  FRESH is thinking about all the good times him and his little sister had.

FRESH

Man, I can’t believe she is gone just like that.  I need to hurry up n’ get to Meez, so we can talk and figure out what we are going to do about what happened.  When I tell Meez I wonder how he is going to take what happened, cause she was like his little sister too.

(When Fresh gets to Meez, Meez can tell that something is wrong just by the way he is walking.)

FRESH
 Waz happenin.

MEEZ

Wats good –

FRESH

I got somethin’ to tell you, Meez.

MEEZ

What is it?

FRESH
When I went home, my mom told me that my sister was dead.

MEEZ

Dead . . . No – Not my little sis – Do you know who did it?

FRESH

Not yet, but it make sense why my mom has been sad for the last week or so.  When I find him, I’ma kill him!

MEEZ

N’ I’ma be right there with you.

FRESH

(To himself)  Man, I hope that Meez is with me all the way n’ finding who killed my sister? Man, it’s so hard walking around seeing my mom down because of what happened to my little sister.

MEEZ

I can’t believe they really took her just like that!  I mean she wasn’t my sister, but I knew her for so long and so well that she seemed like one of my little sisters.

FRESH

So you f’ sho’ gonna help me touch that dude, right?

MEEZ

I got yo’  back, man.  How many times you gonna ask me?

FRESH

I’m  just makin’ sure you got me.

MEEZ

Since we have a few hours before day time hits, we should plan out what we are going to do.

(Fresh and Meez sit there in silence for a few seconds.)

FRESH

Meez, you got any good ideas where we should start?

MEEZ

Yeah – did your mom tell you where she found her?

FRESH

Yeah – right before you cross the river to get to the east side of the forest.

MEEZ

By the river before the east side?  What was she doing over there!  That’s where all our enemies are  – don’t she know that?

FRESH

I don’t   know – but she know now.

MEEZ

The sun is about to come up.  You ready to go look around?

FRESH

Come on, lets go.

(Meez and Fresh start walking to the river where their mom found her.)

MEEZ

Since we only have five hours before the sun drops, we should start out by trying to find tracks that lead away from where she was.

FRESH

That’s a good idea.

MEEZ

A – Fresh – Can you smell anything?

FRESH

Yeah, and I can still see some of her left over bones that the crows didn’t get.

MEEZ

Damn – try not to let it get to you.

FRESH

Meez, when we find who did this to my sister, we are going to rip the heart out and let the vultures feed on their rotting flesh.

MEEZ

Sounds good.

FRESH

That will be my gift to the vultures – I won’t even sniff it or take apiece back home, ‘cause I want the birds to eat it.

MEEZ

A – Fresh – here come a pack of bears – You know them?

FRESH

Hell no!

MEEZ

They deep – like 15 deep, n’ they look like they want us next –

FRESH

I know, huh –

MEEZ

Let’s do it move n’!

FRESH

Meez – are they still behind us?

MEEZ

Yeah!

FRESH

Spill up n’ meet me by my cave!

MEEZ

Solid.  (To himself)  Man, if I keep helpin’ this man out, I’ma get wack, n’ not be able to help my moms out or pass down my legacy – what should I do?

FRESH

Meez you koo?

MEEZ

I’m solid!  What about you?

FRESH

I’m alright!

MEEZ

(To himself)  Man, I really want to help my boy out but I’m not tryin’ to die at 17 for helpin’ him out.  But he would do the same for me.  If I needed him to.  I don’t want to be selfish and only think about me n’ my friend when I know that my mom, sister and brother need my help as well.  And not only them, I want to grow old and pass my wisdom down to someone else when I grow tall n’ old, and if I happen to get wack down or burned, then I can’t do that.

FRESH

We gonna have to get back at them suckas who chased us.

MEEZ

Fresh, you think it’s a good idea to calm down for a bit and maybe try n’ forget?

FRESH

Forget!

MEEZ

Not forget but know that the bear who took your sister will get his?

FRESH

Damn – I knew you weren’t gonna be down for this kind of stuff n’ I knew you would get cold feet!

MEEZ

I ain’t never had cold feet a day n’ my life –

FRESH

I know that whoever took my sister will get their’s  . . . N’ it’s gonna be by me!

MEEZ

Did you see how many bears were chasing us?

FRESH

Yeah – so what’s the point?

MEEZ

How many more you think are on the east side waiting for us to go over there so that they can wack us?

FRESH

I don’t care!  As long as I get the one who took my sister it’s all good.

MEEZ

What about you having your kid and starting a family of your own – ‘member when you said that?

FRESH

Yep, n’ I said it when my sister was alive!

MEEZ

Think about it at least – just think about it, alright.

FRESH

I thought about it and I want he or she dead by my paws n’ no one else’s.

MEEZ

Well, give me time to at least think it through.

FRESH

How much time?

MEEZ

When the sun goes down.

FRESH

So you need two hours?

MEEZ

Yeah –

FRESH

Alright.

MEEZ

(To himself)   What can I tell him to make him not want to go over there?

(Meez took a walk around the forest.)

FRESH

Took you long enough.  I thought you were gonna forget about me.

MEEZ

Naw, I can’t forget about ma friend who was about to go commit suicide!

FRESH

Well to let you know, I though about what you said n’ something my mom said n’ that everyone dies for a reason.  I also thought my mom already lost one of her cubs, why should I make it another.

MEEZ

That’s good, ‘cause my mom told me that too, when my dad got burned down when I was four.  But  anyway you still want to go get them?

FRESH

Yeah, I do, but I’ma let something else get the bear who wacked my sister.  ‘Cause I know she wants me to keep it lit for her since she is gone.

THE END
