Characters: Nella the Princess Mermaid Pearl the Queen Mermaid
Setting: Deep down in the purple ocean with seaweed and water plants swaying in the water. In a pink beautiful castle made of coral Mer-mother and Mer- daughter drama is taking place.
Time: Approximately 11:00 AM
At Rise: Nella and her mother Pearl are in the Sand-room preparing themselves for the wedding.
NELLA Mom, can you loosen up this wedding suit, it’s wrinkling my tail.
PEARL Beauty is pain, my darling, beauty is pain.
NELLA Yeah, well I don’t even want to look like beauty for this Shark Prince.
PEARL Nella Anayella Mer-Royal, we’ve already gone through this millions of times and you’re going to marry Rudolphin.
NELLA No I’m not!
PEARL What do you mean you’re not your wedding is in a wave hour.
NELLA I know mom but can we just discuss this? Please?
PEARL What is there to splash about?
NELLA What do you mean what is there to splash about, you’re deciding my sealife.
PEARL What do you mean I’m deciding your sealife you can’t make decisions for yourself you’re just a mer-child.
NELLA I’m just a “Mer-child” how am I supposed to become queen of the ocean when my mom’s making all the decisions for me.
PEARL Well it’s not like I made all these Mer-Laws I just follow them plus Rudolphin will be there to guide you.
NELLA Well it looks like Mer-dad been guiding you really well now isn’t he! Little does he know he has… he has… competition with…. with a clown fish.
PEARL What the fin. A clown fish. You’re ridiculous, I don’t know anything about a clown fish.
NELLA You’re such a hypocrite. You’re in love with a clown fish but I can’t love Glasses. You, out of all the seafolks should understand me.
PEARL I do understand you I just want what’s best for you. Don’t you get it, I’m just looking out for you, that way you don’t make the same mistakes I did.
NELLA If you’re looking out for me why don’t you just let me make my own decisions and my own mistakes. Why do you want me to make the same mistake you did and marry somefish I don’t love. Why did you marry dad if you didn’t love him.
PEARL It’s complicated Nella, you wouldn’t understand.
NELLA Than why don’t you explain it to me. I’m supposed to become queen in less than a wave hour and you’re treating me like a mer-child.
PEARL It’s just the Mer-Laws we have to follow. They’ve been passed down from wavetime to wavetime and we just can’t make exceptions for you. If you were smart enough you would swim like every other Mermaid and you would have your own little clown fish on the side.
(pregnant pause)
NELLA Well you might agree with these Mer-Laws, but I don’t and if we can’t change them than I can’t be queen of the ocean because I’m already married to Glasses.
PEARL What the fin, you mean you’re married to Glasses, you can’t make those type of decisions for yourself.
NELLA We all have our little secrets now don’t we and I’ve made up my mind and I don’t want to be titled queen anymore if you can’t change the Mer-Laws. You can just cancel the wedding.
PEARL What if I can change the Mer-Laws for you, what can you promise me?
NELLA I promise you I can make the ocean a better place and Glasses can help. He’s really smart, he really knows the about the water. He’s also an engineer. Just give him a chance. You’ll really love him. He’s great. He’s a great husband and he’ll be a very great dad. You don’t know how much it means to me to become queen, but you also don’t know how much Glasses means to me. Mom I just want to do what you couldn’t do when you married Dad and I’m proud of myself for swimming my own course, and now it’s time for you to be proud of me.
PEARL I am proud of you Nella. I can’t make any promises, but as of right now the wedding’s off. I don’t know yet how I’ma change these laws, but I sure will try.
NELLA That’s Right! |
