Description:
Compass Family Resource Center (FRC) partners with families experiencing homelessness to ensure that they are connected to supportive services that meet their needs and develop family resiliency.
Responsibilities
This position provides childcare and educational activities for Compass children ages 6 months and up while their parents participate in case management and therapy sessions, groups, and other on-site meetings. Additional responsibilities include supporting the day-to-day operations of our Family Resource Center.
Specific childcare responsibilities:
- Provide direct care and supervision of children while parents attend classes, groups and one-on-one meetings/case management/therapy sessions.
- Design and lead educational activities for children.
- Communicate with parents and Case Managers about the child’s care experience and any issues or concerns.
- Administer child and parent/child interactive assessment tools.
- Maintain and update accurate childcare records and information into agency database system.
- Maintain a safe and clean environment.
- Report and document any incident that occurs in childcare that impacts the safety and/or well-being of the child.
- Attend and participate in all relevant program and agency meetings.
- Provide back-up support to Compass colleagues when there are no children in need of childcare.
Additional Family Resource Support responsibilities:
- Provide back-up support to Compass colleagues when there are no children in need of childcare.
- Receive and manage in-kind donations.
- Organize and manage donation area.
- Receive deliveries from the Food Bank, Costco, Baby2Baby, etc.
- Assemble bags of food for distribution to clients.
- Keep diaper closet organized and stocked.
- Sort mail.
- Provide back-up for receptionist.
- Screen clients coming into the building.
- Assist with other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bilingual Spanish required.
- Two or more years of experience working directly with 0-5 year-olds required.
- Must be able to lift a child of 30 lbs.
- 12+ units of Early Childhood Education encouraged but not required.
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging work.
- Experience working with people in crisis and demonstrated understanding of issues facing homeless and low-income families.
- Ability to assess and deescalate potentially volatile situations.

Description:
Compass Children’s Center (CCC) is an early childhood education center with a curriculum tailored to meet the specific needs of children living in extreme poverty and homelessness. The Center serves 70 children, ages 0-5, and their families each day, and addresses the social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development of the children, as well as the functioning and well-being of the families.
Responsibilities:
We currently have one Teacher opening in the Infant/Toddler classroom, one in the Preschool classroom, and one Floater opening for a teacher who will work in both classrooms.
The primary responsibility of the teachers is to ensure a safe, healthy and nurturing environment for children based on a positive, non-punitive approach. Every staff member staff is responsible for providing the highest quality of care and for modeling appropriate behavior to children, families and fellow staff.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Implement the Pyramid Model of Teaching through building nurturing and responsive relationships with children, families and fellow staff and through the upkeep of a high quality, supportive environment.
- Plan and implement hands-on activities that develop positive self-esteem and social skills; include a balance of child-directed and teacher-directed activities; and expose children to cultural diversity.
- Plan and implement experiences that promote language, literacy and pre-reading skills; number concepts and pre-mathematic skills; and encourage interest in science by discovery, exploration and questioning the environment.
- Maintain a clean, orderly and well-stocked learning environment. This includes setting up and putting away cots; changing bedding and laundry; stocking and organizing classroom supplies; and arranging furniture and active play equipment.
- Plan and prepare healthy meals and promote healthy eating practices by sitting and eating with the children.
- Promote good personal hygiene habits and independent care skills. This includes diaper changing, toilet training, washing hands and face, assisting children with changing clothes, and brushing teeth.
- Act as the “Primary Teacher” for a group of 3 children which includes primary bonding, individual observations and written documentation of development, and primary communication with families.
- Provide first-aid in event of injuries, choking or other emergencies.
- Complete screenings and assessments and document children’s individual developmental progress.
- Communicate with families through daily exchanges of information and semi-annual family conferences.
- Coordinate, orient and help supervise Foster Grandparents, interns, substitute teachers and volunteers working in the classroom.
- Maintain all written records and logs, e.g. attendance-books, sign-out sheets, accident reports, etc.
Qualifications
- Required: minimum of 12 Early Childhood Education units completed, with plans to complete more in the near future and work towards a Teacher’s Permit.
- At least 2 years of experience working directly with infants/preschool age children
- Able to lift a child of 30 lbs.; set up and move furniture; and bend, squat, sit, kneel and stand in order to engage children at their level
- Health screening, TB and fingerprint clearance (Department of Justice, FBI, Child Abuse Index)
- CPR and First Aid Certificate and Infectious Disease Prevention training
- Ability to provide leadership and accept responsibility

Job Title: GED and Academic Support Instructor- Non-Exempt
Reports to: Educational Programs Director
Salary Range (DOE): $23.00-$25.00 per hour
Location: Youth Access Center
Position Overview
The GED and Academic Support Instructor provides individual and group support for students enrolled in EMSA (Early Morning Study Academy), as well as to the participants in the Construction Program (Math Instruction). The Instructor will work as part of the Education Team and will communicate with Teachers and Counselors to address any identify issues or barriers in the learning process of the students/participants and help them reach their goal of graduation/certification. This position will also be responsible for outreach efforts to secure program participants.

Job Tasks – Specific responsibilities include:
- Provide one-on-on and group support to EMSA enrolled students

- Assist in Outreach activities to secure participants
- Keep track of GED materials and program updates
- Participate in the development of an academic plan for the participants enrolled in the program
- Support students as needed
- Work closely with Counselors in addressing students’ barriers and challenges
- Other tasks as assigned
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree desirable
- Cultural competency: sensitivity to issues of urban youth culture, ethnicity, immigration status, homelessness, gender, gender identification and sexual orientation
- Bilingual English-Spanish highly desirable
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at a time
