Job Description:
The Construction Instructor is responsible for the education and hands-on-training for program participants in basic list and hunt trades such as carpentry, laborers, electrician, plumbers, painters, etc. This program prepares them for entry-level jobs in the trades. This position will lead with all aspects of the construction curriculum including: electrical, framing, dry wall, weatherization, solar, deconstruction and recycling, construction math, etc. The ideal candidate will have the ability to instill strong ethics, values and sense of self-esteem with individuals who face many social and employment barriers and be a positive role model through his/her actions and behaviors.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Demonstrate and teach building and construction techniques in accordance with standards established by the State Building and Construction Trades Council of California
- Effectively instruct students assigned in technical/vocational area(s) and career development skills
- Effectively communicate orally and in writing
- Establish and maintain approved and effective discipline and order regarding assigned technical/vocational area(s)
- safely and effectively operate a variety of machines and equipment appropriate for assigned instruction area(s)
- Familiarity with Environmental Literacy and Concepts
- Strong organizational, interpersonal and supervisory skills
- Work as a team player and in a team environment
- Commitment and ability to work alongside diverse, economically disadvantaged individuals
- Flexible and a self-starter; able to multi-task while also being highly detail-oriented

Job Tasks:
- Instruct participants in basic list and hunt trades skills as identified by program curriculum
- Monitors performance by assessing needs, testing skills and knowledge, and then communicating results to students.
- Supervise participants on offsite jobs authorized to perform work related to training
- Plan and supervise class projects, construction site visits, guest speakers, training site and special events
- Maintain knowledge of participant’s attendance
- Assist trainees in passing safety exam
- Prepare materials and classroom for curriculum activities and testing
- Manage inventory of tools, materials and ordering of supplies
- Assist with maintaining facility (organize inventory, clean work space, etc.)
- Understand and communicate programs, enrollment, and eligibility process
- Develop and work with Construction team daily map/plan
- Provide daily report out of participant’s progress, case management and tracking, as well as evaluation for performance milestones
- Enforce rules and procedures for participants
- Assist with orientation and recruitment efforts
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- Minimum of Five (5) years’ experience in construction trade or related field
- OSHA certification required (must have or be obtained within 60 days of hire)
- Vocational teaching credential preferred (or ability to become certified)
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
- Hearing and speaking to exchange information and make presentations
- Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate tools and equipment
- Drive a vehicle to conduct work
- Lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling; and climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, and crouching.
- Generally, the job requires 30 percent sitting, 30 percent walking, and 40 percent standing.
- Some outdoor work is expected.
