A MOTHER’S TRUST

TIME: afternoon, anytime.

SETTING: Rain forest where it’s moist and barely any sun, because of the trees.

AT RISE: Cervina was heading out to go hunt because she’s hungry and there was no one home. Shantelle relaxes on top a tree, getting some sun on her fur. Cervina is going to her 2nd house that she calls home, which is her aunt’s house.

SHANTELLE

Where were you because it’s almost night time?

CERVINA

I just went to go hunt and brought you dinner for you and my uncle when he gets home.

SHANTELLE

Oh, OK. So have you talked to your Mom, because she asked how you doing and when you coming home.

CERVINA

No, I have not and I’m not planning to go home yet.

SHANTELLE

Why you haven’t talked to your mother?

CERVINA

Tia, I think you know why?

SHANTELLE

No, I don’t know. That’s why I’m asking you.

CERVINA

Please, come on! It’s hella obvious! I just want to be here. Why you don’t want me here, because I can just go if that’s the case.

SHANTELLE

Why you raising your voice?

CERVINA

Sorry, it’s just I’m in a bad mood, Tia.

SHANTELLE

It’s OK, just don’t do it again.

CERVINA

OK. So when is my tio come home?

SHANTELLE

Late. Why?

CERVINA

Nothing. Just asking.

SHANTELLE

(Finishes her dinner) Why you in a bad mood?

CERVINA

‘Cause I was thinking about my dad and how it’s not the same ever since he left.

SHANTELLE

Well, forget your dad! Your dad abandoned you guys and you never heard from him since and if he did care he would have stayed with you guys.

CERVINA

I guess, but I miss how it was when he was here.

SHANTELLE

Well, there is nothing that we can change. He left you guys and that’s that.

CERVINA

I know Tia… I’m just sad. I wish he was here so it could be how it was before he abandoned us.

SHANTELLE

Is there something else bothering you?

CERVINA

Well, yeah, there is.

SHANTELLE

OK, so what is the other thing bothering you?

CERVINA

I just want my mother to trust me again, but I don’t know how Tia.

SHANTELLE

Well, that’s funny, your mom says that you and your sister are disrespecting her, and I told her to be more firm with you guys. ‘Cause I heard that you go to places without your mother’s permission. And you! Yelling back at her. WHAT UP WITH THAT!

CERVINA

OK, so what if I yell back at her. She just pisses the hell out of me so I talk back.

SHANTELLE

Well, you shouldn’t! That’s being disrespectful to your mother and your mother does not want you to be like your sister, ‘cause you two do the same shit.

CERVINA

But like I said, she pisses the hell out of me. And like right now, you are bugging the hell out of me.

SHANTELLE

OK, so how am I bugging the hell out of you!

CERVINA

Maybe you should be less nosey in our life.

SHANTELLE

What?! Well first of all, your mom wanted my help! You can even ask her too.

CERVINA

Oh. Well are you going to help get my mother’s trust or just going to tell me what you guys say behind my back.

SHANTELLE

First of all, you’re the one that says I was being nosey in the first place.

CERVINA

Well, sorry for that because I know tio tells you not to get involved anyways.

SHANTELLE

Well yeah, I know your uncle says that, but your mom is my sister and I hate seeing her cry because of you two.

CERVINA

That’s not true, because my sister does, not me.

SHANTELLE

Well, that’s not what I heard at all.

CERVINA

Well you going to help me or not?

SHANTELLE

Well maybe if you stopped being disrespectful to your mom, maybe you mom would trust you. And just because I cover for you does not mean you can keep asking me to make your mom trust you. ‘Cause that’s on you, not me. Also you mom is not always going to be here, and me too, ‘cause there is going to be a point when we will die and you and sister and brother are going to be on your own. A tear comes out after what Shantelle said and she wipes it off.

CERVINA

Well, I know there is going to be a time when you guys are not going to be here. So what can I do to get my mother to listen to me in the first place, because every time I try to say something she says “no”?

SHANTELLE

Well, what did you tell her, that she said no to?

CERVINA

Well, I want to go to my friend’s and she said “no”.

SHANTELLE

Why would you want to go to your friend’s house in the first place?

CERVINA

‘Cause I want to kick it with my friend and get away from all this drama at home. Just please, help me, Tia.
