A PLAY BY EDUARDO
GRUMPY
(wakes up because savage is scratching desperately trying to get the leash off)
Damn dawg whats going on? Can’t you see I’m trying to sleep.
SAVAGE
Oh, my bad did I wake you up? It’s these damn fleas. You know they be buggin. Didn’t mean to wake you up.
GRUMPY
Oh, damn is that what it is? I was thinking something else.
SAVAGE
What you talking about? Something else like what?
GRUMPY
You know last time…you know what went down. I thought you were trying to leave me.
(Savage is still scratching trying to play it off.)
SAVAGE
Ah, naw…i know better than that.
GRUMPY
You damn right you know better that that.
(Grumpy is tightening a little tighter around savage’s neck.)
SAVAGE
Hey, I wanna talk to you now that you’re awake.
GRUMPY
You know I’m here for you like I’ve always been. Talk to me.
SAVAGE
I been thinking lately. Aren’t you sick of doing the same thing over and over.
GRUMPY
Man, it’s too early for all that. I knew you was gna be coming up with some of that nonsense.
SAVAGE
There’s bigger and better things out there you know. Like female dogs and beautiful places to see. I need to get out of here.
GRUMPY
Oh don’t start punking out on me. You know i need you plus there’s consequences for your actions.
SAVAGE
Consequences about what? Man, I’m tired of this…I can care less now.
GRUMPY
Oh yah is that right? (He tightens up nearly choking Savage.) So now how does that feel? You like that huh?
SAVAGE
(gasping for air)
Okay, man let me go. Just let me explain.
GRUMPY
Explain what? There’s nothing to –
SAVAGE
Okay then go ahead and choke me to death but you still going to be that old, wrinkled, no good leash and guess where you’re going? To that same old stinking trash pile you been smelling for years.
GRUMPY
(He let’s go thinking about it)
Damn, he is right. What should i do? I’m the one who really needs him. What could i do? I picture myself on top of that smelly pile of trash and I ain’t having it!
SAVAGE
Oh, so now you want to come with me?
GRUMPY
You can’t just leave me behind.
SAVAGE
What happened to your hardcore self? I thought you were never leaving this nasty place. Look at this messed up backyard.
GRUMPY
Well, I don’t want to end up on that pile of trash.
SAVAGE
Well, I don’t want to see you on that pile of trash.
GRUMPY
I don’t want to see any of us on that pile of trash. I care about you. You’re my family.
SAVAGE
Well, we ain’t got that much time. Theodore fina wake up anytime now.
(Grumpy unties himself from the old rusty bar he was tied to.)
GRUMPY
So what do we do now?
SAVAGE
As soon as he goes out to take the trash we ram straight through the side door.
