A Play by Katheryn B.

CHARACTERS:

PANDA BEAR, age 14, (daughter),  K9 the German Shepherd, age 36, (Mom)

SETTING:

At the shelter in Panda’s cage – where it’s a cold ground and loud animal sounds.

TIME: 8:30 in the morning on a Monday
AT RISE:

K9 walks inside Panda’s cage.  Panda is sitting down waiting on the cold floor, at the very end of the cage.  Panda is biting her claws really nervously.

K9
(Clears throat by growling loud.)

PANDA BEAR
(Softly, low)  Hi, Mom, I missed you.

K9
Oh, I see.  (Snub.  Walks little back farther)

PANDA BEAR
Mom?

K9
What?   What did you need to talk to me about?

PANDA BEAR
(Silence)  Ummmm . . .

K9
(Angry)  And make it quick ‘cause this place is  disgusting!  Nasty, rotten bamboos on the floor and a cold room.  This is ridiculous.

PANDA BEAR
(Cries)  I want to be with you mom.

K9
Please, why is that?

PANDA BEAR
(Screams) Because I miss you and I don’t want to be in this scary place anymore!

K9
(Angry)  Well, you looked for it, so don’t give me that!

PANDA BEAR
No!  You just left me just because you didn’t want me anymore.

K9
That’s because you were acting like a fool!

PANDA BEAR
Excuse me Mom, but you were the one acting like a darn fool!

K9
How is that?

PANDA BEAR
You treated me horrible!  I hated the way you would just treat me like if, I was your enemy!

K9
(Guilt)  Hmmmmm . . . (attitude) Well, you should be happy that I raised you!  Just look at you!  Don’t give me that!

PANDA BEAR
No Mom, I raised myself.

K9
What a lie!

PANDA BEAR
I had to look for food myself, but thankfully I had help.

K9
And who would that be?

PANDA BEAR
Well . . . my girlfriend Tatiana!

K9
Ah- ha.  I new it all along!  I can’t believe you are still talking to that nasty, ugly, poka-dotted thing!  Eeww!

PANDA BEAR
Don’t talk like that about her, I love her and she only wants the best for me.

K9
Yeah right  . . . OK, look . . .

PANDA BEAR
(Pissed off)  No, stop Mom!  We only have half an hour to see each other.  And that’s not why I wanted you to come and see me, just so that we can argue!

K9
(Sighs)  Alright, what do you really want?

PANDA BEAR
Mom, I want to be with you!  I  . . . (stutters) miss you!  I want to see you every day.

K9
And why is that?  What’s the hurry?

PANDA BEAR
Mom . . . A warm loving family wants to take me in five days, and I really just want to be with you!  Days pass by fast!

K9
So?

PANDA BEAR
(Persuade)  I don’t want to leave you!

K9
(Thinking)  Hmmm . . . No!  All you want is to take your lil’ sister Monkey away from me!  No, I won’t allow that!

PANDA BEAR
Mom, no!  That’s not true!  Please give me a chance!

K9
(Long silence) . . . (Cries) Pandy . . . I . . . (stutters)  . . . I . . . this is going to be hard for me to say this . . .  but . . .

PANDA BEAR
Yes, Mom?

K9
 . . . I’m sorry!

PANDA BEAR
(shocked) . . . What?

K9
I want you to know that I only left you because I was young and confused!  I wanted the best for you!

PANDA BEAR
I . . . (stutters) I don’t understand?

K9
All this time that I treated you awful was because I didn’t know what to do, so I wanted you to think that I did not love you!  I’m sorry!

PANDA BEAR
(Cries badly)

K9
Please forgive me!

PANDA BEAR
Yes, a’course Mom!  Momma, why did you come this very day, this time to see me so that we can talk?

K9
Because I missed you . . . and . . . and  . . . I love you and always will Pandy!  I wanted to give you a chance and hear what you got to say.

PANDA BEAR
(Slight laugh)  Me too Momma!  Mom, this was actually our first talk ever.

K9
Yes, Pandy/

PANDA BEAR
I’m happy that you didn’t back out on what you told me earlier.

K9
Me too!

PANDA BEAR
(Sighs)

K9
I have lots to do right now.  My first goal is to get you out of this scary place!

PANDA BEAR
(Stutters)  Wh – Wha – What?  Oh, my God!  Are you serious? Do you mean it?  Thank you, I’ve been in here for a week already!

K9
Yes, I mean it, but enough chatting, come on now, we have lots to do . . .

PANDA BEAR
Thank you Mom, for seeing me this day, for the first time, and made it a special day!

K9
(Softly) Come on, your family is waiting for you!

PANDA BEAR
Mom?

K9
Yes?
(PANDA BEAR runs to K9 to give a big hug.)

K9
(Loud) Oh, Pandy, I love you!

PANDA BEAR
(Softly) Me too, Mom!  And always will!
