AT RISE:

It’s dark. There are broken bottles of sour milk on the ground, there are a few dead sewer rats decomposing in the alley. Lucky is sitting in an abandoned car waiting for Cursed to come by.

LUCKY

Was up carnalito, where you been? Hanging with them housecats again?

CURSED

What do you have against them, they don’t do nothing to no one?

LUCKY

You know exactly what it is. They hang with the sewer rats, don’t act dumb.

CURSED

Whatever, cat. You know damn well I wasn’t with no sewer rats, never that. You got me mistaken for some little cat or something. Cus Ima be an alleycat till I drop.

LUCKY

Wow – Wow – Wow. Didn’t you just tell me yesterday that you were done with being an alleycat, that it’s too much to handle, that you’re trying to be a housecat or some spit?

CURSED

Yeah I did say that, but just cus I’ll be a housecat don’t mean I ain’t no alleycat. I’ll always be from Roli,no matter what. It’s just that I’m different than you. I can’t take it no more. Too many alleycats have been passing lately. It’s too much for me. Plus all we doin’ out here is killing these sewer rats. They’re harmless, at least to us. Anyways they be off that litter, they couldn’t think right if their life depended on it.

LUCKY

See, you got the game mixed up. I’m from Roli, I’m from the alley. I’M AN ALLEYCAT. You, well you’re my brother that’s it, you ain’t no real alleycat. You made up your mind last night when you told me you wasn’t down wit my plan no more.

CURSED

So it’s like that, cat. You know damn well your plan is sorry! It ain’t safe. You’ll put all the alleycats in danger; the older ones and the young ones. If you really care for the alley, like you say you do, you’ll call your plan off right now before you put us all in danger.

LUCKY

What do you mean ‘us’? You’re a housecat. If you really loved us you’ll go along with the plan. Without you, my plan ain’t ‘fool proof’. But if you was still with it, we’ll be like Montana and Rice, ain’t no droppin’ balls, especially now. So tell me here cat, cus Ima do it regardless, are you in or are you out?

CURSED

Why are you trying to put me as the bad guy? Why you trying to flip the script? It’s you that’s gonna put us in danger.

LUCKY

No it’s you, setting us up for failure. Why didn’t you tell me you wasn’t within the plan from the beginning? Why did you have to wait until the day before the plan is put into affect? Why? Just answer me this one question.

CURSED

(Deep breath) Alright, just two days ago, someone from my school said his family would adopt me. They said we would be moving in three days, which is in a couple of hours. I realized that if I did follow through with the plan, I would get caught and thrown in the pound for sure. Then I’ll never have the chance to become a housecat. It took me a while to decide if I should leave or not. As soon as I did make up my mind, I came and told you.

LUCKY

(disappointed) Ohh. So you’re moving huh? So that’s why you ain’t with it no more? You know what? Forget about the plan right now. Not only are you leaving the alley but you’re leaving our MOM. You know you’re Mom’s favorite. You know she’ll be heartbroken if you leave her. She’ll feel like you hate her, like you don’t want to be around her. You know how she is.

CURSED

Well how would she feel if I die? Or I get caught trying to steal all the housecat’s tuna and get thrown into the pound, huh? At least she’ll know I’m safe.

LUCKY

It’s not about that. You know you can trust me. Why would I put you in a situation where you can’t succeed? I ain’t never been someone to set someone up for failure. Just trust me on this one, I’m your brother cat. Just trust me. If you really love me, you’ll do it.

CURSED

Cat, I’ve always loved you. Even when I found out you weren’t my blood brother, I still lo-…

LUCKY

(interrupting) What do you mean when you found out we weren’t blood brothers?

CURSED

Nothing cat, I’m trippen’. I don’t know what I was saying.

LUCKY

So what we’re not family no more? You think you’re better than me, just cus you trying to be a housecat now? Well let me tell you this, I don’t care who or what you are, I’m an alleycat and I can’t stop, won’t stop and will never be stopped. Do you understand? Huh? Do you understand Cursed? You’re nothing to me. You ain’t nothing but a back stabbing housecat.

CURSED

Na, It’s not even like that. You can trust me. I’m not with it, why can’t you understand?

LUCKY

I don’t understand and I never will. All I know is that you know my plan and that you’re now a housecat.

CURSED

What is that supposed to mean?

LUCKY

I don’t know, you tell me?

CURSED

Are you serious cat? Do you really think I would snitch on you? I’m not a sewer rat! I won’t say nothing to no one. Trust me.

LUCKY

As of last night, I don’t trust nobody.

CURSED

You have all the right not to trust me, but all I want is for you to be ok with me being a housecat.

LUCKY

I don’t know cat.

CURSED

Come on Lucky. Just cus we’re different doesn’t mean we’re not family. Please Lucky, just this one thing.

LUCKY

(deep breath) Alright, but at least tell mom.

CURSED

Ok

(Lucky walks away. He looks over his shoulder)

LUCKY

I love you

CURSED

I love you too cat.

(Lucky is picked up by the pound the next day. Cursed and Lucky will never see each other again.)
