Title:

Currents of Life

 By:

CHARACTERS: WONDER the RAINDROP, Male Age 18

HAZE the ROCK, Male Age 18

SETTING: On bedrock, near the shore, at night when the tides are

high, the sand and rocks are damp, there are seagulls

flying over the rocks, scavenging for food. The only

sound you can hear are the waves crashing and the

breeze carrying the salty scent of the ocean.

TIME: At Midnight on Sunday in early spring.

AT RISE: WONDER the RAINDROP is comfortably settled into one

of HAZE the ROCK’S tiny cracks. HAZE the ROCK is in a

deep heavy slumber.

WONDER

 Haze, Haze! Wake Up!

 HAZE

(Yawns) What is it now? I’m trying to sleep.

 WONDER

We have to get ready to go. We don’t have much time!

HAZE

(Grumpily) Kick Rocks! It’s too early.

WONDER

I wish I could kick you until you’re fully awake! Get Up. Now!

HAZE

I’m pretty sure the ocean isn’t going anywhere, anytime soon. I mean if you

really want to leave now, go ahead. (Jokingly)

WONDER

Nice sarcasm. You know I can’t leave by myself. That hungry sand would

suck me in like a frog catching a fly.

HAZE

The sand will always be hungry, so why are you suddenly in such a hurry?

WONDER

Because we’re running of time!

HAZE

Time? Five years we have been stuck here, and now you’re talking about

WONDER

Yes, and it took five years to finally convince you that we should leave this

HAZE

Yeah, but we never decided when we were going to leave. Wait until the

WONDER

Are you serious?! Even if we leave in the morning, I would burn in the sun,

before we make it halfway.

HAZE

Then we can leave tomorrow night.

WONDER

The tides are at their highest right now, at this time of year. Tonight is the

last night that they will be this high. If we don’t leave now, we will never

HAZE

Well that makes sense! We need to wake the others up so they can roll off

us. It would be rude to just push them off while they’re sleeping.

[The Angry Rocks….roll off angrily]

WONDER

HAZE

(Excitingly) This feels great! It’s been years since I’ve felt this free.

WONDER

I now! Okay, let’s get moving.

HAZE

WONDER

HAZE

I don’t think I can do this…

WONDER

HAZE

WONDER

Let me guess.. You’re scared of the dark?

HAZE

WONDER

It’s okay. I know how you feel, but do you know what’s worse?

Being scared of the light; knowing that if you take a quick glance at the sun,

you’ll instantly burn to death. (Horrified)

HAZE

Damn…I can’t say that I know how you feel, but that’s horrible.

WONDER

It is; but now is the time to prove to yourself that you are strong.

HAZE

I don’t know. I don’t think I’m brave enough to do this on general.

WONDER

HAZE

Even if I overcame my fear of the dark. There are other things holding

WONDER

HAZE

I can’t just leave the other rocks like that. They’ve been like my family after

the waves took me away from my family on the other side of the ocean.

WONDER

They’ve been like my family too. I mean don’t get me wrong but eventually

we have to move on. If they really cared for either of us, they would let us

go. HAZE

I understand what you’re saying, but them holding us back is not the

problem. I just wish they came with us.

WONDER

Me too: but maybe now is not their time to move on, some day they may

catch up to us, or perhaps we can come back for them. Let them realize for

themselves that this abandoned place has us nowhere in life; literally.

HAZE

I know but they don’t see it that way.

WONDER

We have stuck together as a family just as we’ve been isolated from the

rest of the world, full of knowledge to learn, and opportunities to find.

HAZE

You’re right. I really want to go out there and find my family, but what if

they’re not there? What if I end up getting lost and making this situation

WONDER

Don’t be so negative. You will never know until you find out. What if they’re

on the other side desperately waiting for you to come back?

HAZE

That’s true, but I’m afraid to go. It’s the biggest decision I’ve ever made in

WONDER

It’s mine too, but I want us to have a better life: a better future.

HAZE

I honestly think you just want me to go because you need me,

WONDER

I do need you, or else I’ll get eaten by the sand; but I also need you as a

friend, a companion: as the brother you’ve always been. Maybe I’ve never

told you, but I’m afraid of going alone.

HAZE

That means a lot and, I’m willing to go with you, but this harder for me than

it is for you. I’m afraid of sinking at the bottom of the dark, evil depths of the

WONDER

If the currents and movements of the ocean never stop moving, then

neither will you. Stop being hesitant. We really don’t have time.

HAZE

I don’t think I can do this… I’m sorry. I will take you as far as you need to go

WONDER

No, you must come with me! We’ll come back for the others once you find

your family. By then, they will be convinced that this place is hopeless.

HAZE

Don’t be hypocritical. I’m letting you go, not holding you back.

WONDER

There are beautiful beaches on the other side! There are many plants and

animals that can become our friends. We will never feel trapped or isolated

ever again! HAZE

(Ignores what wonder said)

I can see the sun rising at the other side of the ocean. Let’s get you moving

before it’s too late. The tides are still high, but I will need the help of the

WONDER

This really hurts. I thought we would have a journey together as we

traveled across the seas…but I guess I have no choice. Take me to the

[Haze carries Wonder and keeps him safe deep within one of his tiny

cracks while the others push him towards the ocean]

HAZE

Don’t forget that you will always be my brother. Now is not my time to move

on. If my family is really waiting for me, then I should have plenty of time.

Someday we’ll meet again and share our stories.

WONDER

I won’t: and you will always be my best friend, brother.

[Wonder, Haze, and the other rocks notice a huge wave coming from a

HAZE

Uh-oh….That’s not good… It’s too late to turn back now. This is

impossible. WONDER

No my friend; this is fate.

[The wave crashes against them and carries them away…]
