Decisions Decisions (2009)

A Play by John R.

CHARACTERS: Siba, a Lion, age 8 in lion years Beast, a Bear age 9
SETTING: In the cave. Siba could look outside to a jungle, a mile away.  The pack of lions are distance from the cave in the desert. Temperature is blazing hot in the Sahara desert. He hears lots of lions howling and the rhythm of the deer running,  smells dead animals and dirty lions.
TIME: Hot summer day, 3:00 in the afternoon
AT RISE: We see Siba waking up; he stretches and walks to the front of the cave to get warm.

SIBA

I want my life better, I want to finally learn how to hunt, to learn how to sneak on my prey, grab the deer by the neck and suffocate it. I want to kill my prey alive. I want to find a mate to start a family, because I never had a family. I was always alone.

(Siba walks off toward the pack.. Beast is walking toward Siba’s cave)

BEAST

How am I going to tell Siba the bad news, that we can’t hang out and I can’t teach him how to hunt because my dad won’t accept that? He says that not the rules of the wild. And if the eagle see us it will be worser.

I don’t know if Siba is capable of killing me, like my dad said. I might lie and say I’ma see him after hibernation. I don’t want to hurt my friend feelings. I’ma have to leave forever. (he see Siba, calls)   Siba!

(Siba looks angry and mean, he growls)

BEAST

What’s wrong? I have something to tell you. (Siba growls again) What the hell is wrong?

SIBA

You abandoned me and didn’t teach me what I needed to know

BEAST

But, but…

SIBA

But nothing. You let me down. You didn’t teach me how to hunt.

BEAST

Siba, I didn’t want to tell you why I couldn’t teach you how to hunt. My father and the jungle doesn’t allow that. I didn’t want to hurt your feelings!

SIBA

Why you didn’t been tell me this? You left me hanging, looking stupid.

BEAST

I didn’t want to hurt your feelings, and you stop being my friend.

SIBA

But you been knowing me since I was little. You’re like my big brother.  I would understand where you coming from with your dad. But are you going to listen to him?

BEAST

I don’t know at this point. He is my dad, and he will not let me live in the jungle if I associate with you. Are you okay with this?

SIBA

I remember when I was a cub and the hyena’s ate my parents, and you seen me licking my parent’s faces, and you said, “it’s okay, follow me, I’ll take care of you” That stuck with me for life. And now you’re turning your back on me, because of what your father said. You know me better than anybody. I’m already alone with nobody to depend on but you!

BEAST

(aside) I can try… no, I can’t do that. (to Siba) Siba, I will always love you like a little brother, but it’s just some things that’s not meant to be. I have a family, and you’re old enough to take care of your self.

SIBA

I’m still a cub compared to the wild, and you know everything about it. But if you feel that way …It’s alrite tho. I will join my people, my kind, the pack.

BEAST

What?! That’s the most ruthless pack in the wild. What are you doing? You will get killed messing with them.

SIBA

At least they won’t turn they back on me like you are.

BEAST

It’s not my fault!

SIBA

But you can do something about it, not listen to your dum father.

BEAST

He once told me a story about a lion he was friends with, and close like we are, and it tried to kill him.

SIBA

I’m not that lion! Hold on, what you saying, my bear?

BEAST

You have a point, but you ARE a lion, siba. That’s the point.

SIBA

That’s not what the wild is suggesting; this is about what your father said, (yelling) isn’t it?

BEAST

(under pressure) Uh… what you mean?

SIBA

It’s okay, I get it. Its good.

BEAST

But Siba–

SIBA

But nothing! Tell me what you’re going to do, listen to your father or follow your instincts?

BEAST

(serious) For us to be friends …we have to move away from here, far away. Me and my family also. You’re right, I’m my own bear and I should make my own decisions

SIBA

(happy) Great, when do we leave? And where do we go?

BEAST

Far, far, my little brother, where we could make our own rules. In Freeland. I’m sorry I was out my mind. You would of thought I was no them berries.

SIBA

It’s okay, big bra, I forgive you.

BEAST

Hold on. Let me get my family. Wait here.

SIBA

No, I’m coming with you

BEAST

Mmmm …. Alrite…

(Siba and Beast make it to the wild. Beast gets his family. Suddenly)

SIBA

What the hell?!?

BEAST

Siba, run it’s my father

(Siba falls and breaks his leg. Father slays him. Beast kills his father, and as he moves away with his family, says)

BEAST

Siba will always be in my heart.
