Characters: True, the dragon, male, 18 years old.
Ambition, the dragon, female, 18 years old.
Lucky, baby dragon, 9 months old.
Setting: In the year 2054, San Francisco in the SF 49ers’ stadium,
Candlestick Park.
Time: 11 pm, True just got out of work.
At Rise: True walks in the 49er stadium and Ambition is waiting for him
on the field and the baby is sleeping.
AMBITION
Why do you come home so late?
TRUE
I just got out of work, beautiful. Why you mad? I always come home
late.
AMBITION
I hate when you come home very late. I’m getting tired of this.
TRUE
Well, I can’t do anything else. I got to work everyday just to support us.
AMBITION
(sighs) It feels weird and it don’t seem like you anymore since I gave
birth.
TRUE
I know it changed. I been working everyday, working my tail off.
AMBITION
I like the old you: happy. But sometimes we don’t have a good
relationship together since you always work, work every damn day.
TRUE
I want you to understand me, that I’m doing this for us, not just me. It’s
for me, you, the baby and the future.
AMBITION
But you never spend time with our family. It’s like you are married to
your job.
TRUE
You won’t say that when I buy you a 49ers gold crown.
AMBITION
I don’t want anything but you spending time with our family.
TRUE
So you want me to quit my FULL-time job?!?! If I do that, where we
going to live?!?! Who’s going to take care of us?!?!
AMBITION
Hear that? That’s why I need you around. If things don’t change, I guess
it’s time to break up and I can find a real father that can be there for me
and Lucky.
TRUE
Are you crazy?! You think some guy dragon’s going to take care of my
baby? MY baby?! Why you acting like I don’t exist and won’t be there in
my kid’s future?
AMBITION
I feel depressed!!! I feel lonely!!! I just don’t feel happy anymore.
(she cries)
TRUE
(hugging her) Baby!
AMBITION
I’m scared that things won’t be the same as they were.
TRUE
I love you so much. That’s why I work so hard everyday as an airplane,
flying animal prisoners. They get mad, talk spit fire, and I feel tortured.
I’m just doing this because I’d do whatever to get gold to support us. I
can save gold up for a vacation for us so I can spend more time with
you. We can go anywhere: Hawaii, Philippines and we can go
swimming with our baby and we can travel all around. And we can get
married on a tropical island.
AMBITION
That’s great but when everything is over after the vacation, you gonna
be out still working. You can’t just buy love. I don’t need a vacation. I
don’t need anything but you spending time with our family.
TRUE
If you was in my situation, what would you do?
AMBITION
I would quit the job and raise the baby because I love my family and
would raise them.
TRUE
So how we going to pay the rent? How we going to eat?? How we going
to live the rest of our lives?
AMBITION
My mom bought the Oakland Raiders stadium because she ate all the
Raiders players and took their gold. And we can move in and save
gold. We don’t have to pay rent every month.
TRUE
That’s a great idea but where can we get the gold to buy tobacco and
gasoline for the baby food?
AMBITION
We can eat the palm trees. We can eat the field.
TRUE
Let’s try it but I can’t just quit.
AMBITION
Work part-time and save up.
TRUE
It’s not possible because I got to go to different states and I can’t just
stop and go back. Let’s switch & see what you see and I’ll take care of
Lucky.
AMBITION
I would try but I ain’t stupid like you for leaving us.
TRUE
Look, I’m going to get gold and you just got to deal with it because I
do this for us and the baby’s future.
AMBITION
Well you can’t see us again.
TRUE
What the fire you talking about?!?! You ain’t taking my baby with you
anywhere!!
AMBITION
Now you care about the baby?
TRUE
Well you can leave but Lucky stays with me.
AMBITION
You going to take Lucky and work and leave me alone?
TRUE
Look, I’m trying to stay together and not leave anyone.
AMBITION
I don’t want us to break up. I just want you to be with us but it’s hard
because you’re not around. The baby needs a dad that can show him
how to eat Raiders fans.
TRUE
I know, I know.
AMBITION
If you’re not around, he’s going to burn down Oakland. If his dad’s not
around he’s going to be a punk and dragons are going to pick on him.
TRUE
Well, he’s not going to be a mommy’s boy because I’m going to spend
time with him. I’m going to show him how to be a man and how to take
care of you.
AMBITION
What are you smoking now?
TRUE
I’m going to take care of the family. I’m going to work part-time. I’m
going to keep us together. Whatever it takes for me to make my family
happy. I’m going to ask my boss if I can get a raise and explain my
situation to him because it’s hard for me to fly prisoners.
AMBITION
Oh my dragon, really!?!?
TRUE
But if things don’t go right, I’m going right back to full-time.
AMBITION
OK, I love you.
TRUE
I love you too, and we’re going to be together forever.
