Life’s Own By Darwin
Characters: Bo-ski the Cardinal, Male, 15 Savy the Crow, Male, 19
Setting: In a hole surrounded by many other holes inside a sequoia tree. In the hole are two bunks made of dirt and the rest is pure solid wood. These holes were made in these big trees by woodpeckers who designed these places for jailbirds like Savy and Bo-ski. There are also varied loud echoes of birds in and around the inside halls of the sequoia tree.
Time: 1:00pm on a steamy summer afternoon.
At Rise: Bo-ski is working out doing wing spreads. Savy walks in the hole and stands by the wall opposite of where Bo-ski’s working out.
BO-SKI
What’s up bruh? This is new.
SAVY
What you talkin’ ‘bout?
BO-SKI
I mean you just flopped on in here and all smoove and humble and stuff. I ain’t ever seen you like this. Where’s the jittery, paranoid, Savy at?
SAVY
Bruh I’m good, just felt like hollin at you for a cool minute since I ain’t finna see you again for a while with you on your way out and everything.
BO-SKI
Man tell me about it. I been waiting for this day for about two years. To keep it 100 though-

SAVY
Bo-ski bruh, I need you to rock with me this one last time before you get out.
BO-SKI
What’s good bruh? I got you. What you need, some seeds on your books, a little chick to holla at you? Just let me know.
SAVY

BO-SKI

SAVY

BO-SKI

Bruh, we need to get on a few of these cats up in here. They been on some otha stuff, just wildin’ like they ain’t got no worries or a seed of sense in they mind. BO-SKI

SAVY

BO-SKI

BO-SKI

SAVY

BO-SKI
I’m leaving you hanging because I ain’t tryna mess up my last ticket to freedom? You on some selfish stuff right now, what about my plans?
SAVY
Stop acting new to this bruh, when have you just switched up on me before. On top of that your plans are on the outs, not here, not now.
BO-SKI
I owe you?! From what?! If I had a feather for every time I came through for you the humans would make a king size pillow out of me!!!
SAVY Oh so now you don’t know what you owe me for? What about the last time I had to go down because of you knocked that vulture out its feathers.
BO-SKI
Come on bruh, I ain’t tryna hear all that sorry stuff right now. You knew stuff like that was part of the game when we joined it.
SAVY

What?! Now I paid my do’s. Paid in full for what I did. For leading, for not hesitating, for rockin, for never leaving a homie behind, and for following, for following this?! SAVY

We older now, I’m older now Savy. I got stuff to do when I get out. Like moving out the Oak Tree I’m living in and move to another side of these grounds. The side where the sun shines over our nests, the air is clean, the soil is dark and fresh and our surroundings are safe, feel me?
SAVY
I guess bruh, know that if you back out on this and away from me, you’re done with.
BO-SKI
I ain’t got no worries. That just makes me my own man while whoever said they on me is just taking orders. So save all that for the birds
SAVY
(Looks at BO-SKI with an expression of confusion) So this is it for us, huh?
BO-SKI
It really isn’t you could do something for yourself too.
SAVY
Naw, I’m good. I’m sure I’m ‘bout what I’m ‘bout.
BO-SKI
Aright then, food for thought though, before we cut ropes know this “misery loves company” It’s something that took me a long time to learn.
SAVY
What is that supposed to mean? Bo-ski, hold up. BO-SKI
