AT RAISE: At Rise: We see Star and Crystal  waking up for the day inside of a cave. Star is stretching her legs and Crystal is flapping her wings

STAR
So, how did you sleep?

CRYSTAL
Not too well. I couldn’t sleep very much. I was tossing and   turning because of what the 411 Toucan told us last night…

STAR
Yeah, I’m scared myself. We need to get out of here before the
 Tsunami hits tonight.

 CRYSTAL
I’m just so terrified. I can’t fly…and you know I have these dreams that if I start to fly I’ll never stop.

STAR
This is a life or death situation! Don’t you want to meet our parents?

CRYSTAL
Yes! I do. But it’s just too scary…if I never stop flying I’ll never meet     mom and dad.

STAR
Well, If you really want to meet mom and dad you have to fly! (She takes her hoof and kicks her. Crystal flaps her wings and goes off the ground a little bit but has a skip landing.)

CRYSTAL( scared)
What are you doing? This is not normal.

STAR ( mad)
You need to learn how to fly! We’ve been here nine  years. I’ve been trying  to teach you how to fly this whole time. I want to go home.

CRYSTAL( crying)
I’m sorry I can’t fly. I’m just so scared. I flap my wings but as I feel myself rising I  think of me never being able to stop flying. So I stop flapping my wings. I see you frown and see that you’re frustrated. I don’t like to see you that way. I don’t like to see you disappointed in me.

STAR
I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to kick you. I’m just so frustrated- we need to get home! If we don’t get home we’ll stay in this cold, wet cave until we drown. You’ve never experienced mom and dad tucking you into your nest and them telling you how much they care for you.

CRYSTAL
I haven’t experienced that and that’s what I want to experience the most. I don’t want you to leave me. I won’t be able to find my way home.
STAR
It’s like galloping for the first time. You don’t get it right the first time. You have to keep trying and don’t give up.We don’t have much time- the water is rising!

(Crystal walks out the cave to a big boulder, Star follows her)

CRYSTAL
I don’t want to drown…(she steps onto the boulder)
I need your help. Can you teach me how to land?

STAR
I can  tell you how I land. I make sure there is nothing in front of me and as I land, I run until I stop.
(The  water starts to rumble.Crystal jumps off the boulder)

 CRYSTAL
Oh my gosh! It’s getting closer and closer! Help me, Star!

 STAR
It’s really up to you, Crystal. I’ll fly side by side with you.
As we get home to mom and dad, you’ll probably be so excited you’ll forget about landing and fly straight into their mane and feathers.

( Crystal is thinking thinking about it for a bit. )

STAR
The smell of the salt is getting stronger. Mom and dad are waiting for us.

CRYSTAL
OK, I’ll try. I don’t want to drown and I don’t want us to have been here nine years for no reason. You tried nine years to teach me to fly when you could have been home with mom and dad to help protect our home from the angry mules. Now dad has a broken wing because you had to stay with me and take care of me. If we were all together we could have fought off the mob of mules and dad would have his wing and they could have come back to us and helped us. It’s all my fault that we got stuck here.

STAR (stunned)
Wow. I didn’t know you felt like that. It’s not your fault. You were little. You were just born. Some things come unexpectedly.
Come on, Let’s try. I’ll be right next to you the whole time. Don’t worry. I won’t let anything happen to you. Just start, so we won’t have to drown, we could worry about landing later… The wind’s blowing harder. The Island is going to covered in water soon.

CRYSTAL
Ok, let’s hurry up and get this over with.

          (They walk to the shore.)

STAR
Are you ready?

CRYSTAL
As ready as I’m gonna have to be.

STAR
Ok, we’re going to run and flap our wings. As soon as you start to feel yourself rise think about being in dad’s wings and how much you want to be with mom and dad. Don’t think about your nightmares. You can do this. We’ll do it together. I got your back, little sister. I’m not gonna let anything happen to you.

CRYSTAL
Promise?

STAR
Have I let you down yet?

CRYSTAL
No.

STAR
Ok, Let’s go. When I say “run!” we run.

 CRYSTAL (nervous)
Ok.

STAR
Ok… ready…run!

(The waves are crashing and making loud noises. They’re running along the shore flapping their wings. They both begin to rise.)

          STAR ( excited)
Crystal! Crystal! (laughing) You’re doing it. You’re flying!

CRYSTAL ( excited)
Oh my gosh! I’m flying! I’m really flying!  I’m actually flying.

STAR
See, I told  you, you can do it.It’s not as bad as you made it seem.

CRYSTAL
I love it! I feel so free! The island looks so small from up here. I could fly all day.

STAR
Let’s go home. Mom and dad are waiting.

(Crystal is flying crazy- flying all over the place. Star is laughing and watching her fly everywhere.)
