CHARACTERS: Mad Max the Dog, Male age 14 dog years old.
Sad the Goldfish, Male age 2 years old
(Mad’s Brother.)
SETTING: A backyard in Harbor Road, San Francisco. You can feel the air hit your back. You can see barbed wire all over the yard. You can smell gas from cars, people talking in the house and taste cat blood.
TIME: 4:00 pm on a summer day
AT RISE: Mad is talking to Sad threw the house window while in the backyard
MAD
Hey Sad. Hey Sad
SAD
Man, what do you want? I’m busy right now?
MAD
It’s not cool here in the backyard. I gotta get out of here now. I heard that the owners are gonna put me asleep soon. So come on, lets go Sad
SAD
Man, who told you that? They’re making stuff up. Ain’t no one trying to put you asleep man
MAD
You don’t see it how I see it. You don’t feel what I feel. Do you see how they be doing me? I barely eat and the owners always beat me with sticks. You don’t even see what’s going on because you’re always in the house. You don’t even hear me begging for your help.
SAD
That might be true, but I don’t want to leave with you.
MAD
Sad, you are my brother. You all I got man
SAD
I got my own plan and time frame to leave the house. I promise I’ll come back and get you. Trust me
MAD
Sad, don’t get angry with me but I think your not gonna come back for me
SAD
I will come back for you. Trust me. But if you keep on asking me, I’m not coming back for you
MAD
I am only asking you because I think you’re staling. And I don’t even trust you anymore because you don’t even come see if I am alright. You don’t know how lonely it is back here. It feels like nobody loves me. I be crying for you, but you never come to save me when they are beating me. But before you even moved into the house, I became the least favorite pet now. When I cry loud, you don’t even hear me.
SAD
I know they are doing you wrong Mad, but you should trust in my plan. I hate living in this house too. I can’t even feed myself. I have to wait for people to feed me.
MAD
I am down with leaving too, but not without you. Let me tell you about my plan, but it’s gonna be fast because we only got a few minutes. So listen clearly. In a few minutes, animal control is going to be rolling up the block. I will put you in my mouth and bust through the barbed wire door. Then animal control will see me all bloody and pick us up. They will take us to the animal shelter, clean me up and then get us ready for adoption with a family that will love us. That’s my dream. You got it?
SAD
Are you kidding me? How are you going to make it through the barbed wire door? I think you are going to swallow me.That’s why I think my plan is better than yours. What I’m going to do is act like I’m dead and float upside down.Then, they are going to flush me down the drain and while in the sewer I’ll drink the water and become a human. And then I will come back and get you.
MAD
That’s your plan? It sounds like a good plan for you. But I think your gonna have too much fun being a human and about the time you come back I will be dead.
SAD
Naw, it’s not even like that. Once I get situated and make moves to get a house, I will come back and get you. And then we will be living free together
MAD
Do you hear me? I probably will be dead by then. You are my brother. I don’t want to leave you behind because I love you too much. But you are gonna make me do something that I don’t want to do. So wassup; are you down with my idea?
SAD
I love you too Mad. I really do. You are my Big brother and you always had my back. But I am not leaving with you. Just trust me
MAD
Yo man, I am not going without you. Don’t make me do this without you
SAD
(angry)I’m not going with you
MAD
Yes you are!!!!!!!!
Mad jumps up and puts his paws on the window pane. Mad’s left paws accidentally grabs Sad’s fish bowl and knocks it off the table onto the backyard. The fishbowl shatters leaving Sad gasping for air. Mad runs over to him crying. Sad is laying bloody on the ground
MAD
I’m sorry bro. I got mad. I didn’t mean to do this. Come on man, get in my mouth so we can go
SAD
It’s too late man. Just go without me. Go get what you wanted your whole life. I’m free now
Sad stops gasping for air
MAD
All right bro. I gotta go. I hear animal control coming. I’m sorry and I love you Sad
Mad runs towards the barbed wire door. After a few attempts, a bloody and bruised Mad gets out and starts running towards animal control. As he runs out into the street, he accidentally steps in front of a car and gets hit. As he lays down, he looks up to the sky and says
MAD
I’m finally free
