Characters: Luz the bulldog puppy: female, 2 years old. Squeaky the ball: female, 2 years old.
Setting: In a dark, cold, windy alley behind a Mexican restaurant. There are wrappers of food ingredients, old expired tortillas, tamales, & vegetables, along with the sound of people singing with the mariachi.
Time: 8:00am on a winter day.
At rise: Animal control is passing by while Luz & Squeaky are hiding behind the garbage can.
Luz Hey Squeaky! You see the animal control passing by down the street? Squeaky Who? Luz The animal control!
Squeaky Who’s that? Luz The people that pick up animals that live on the street. Squeaky Ohh… Well, where do they take them? Luz To the pound. Squeaky What’s the pound? Luz OMG Squeaky! Are you serious? You don’t know what the pound is? Squeaky Well no… do I need to know what it is or what?
Yes, you do need to know. Squeaky So what is it? How is it like? Luz It’s like jail. Squeaky Jail?! Luz Yes, you are locked in a cage until a family decides to adopt you. Squeaky Stop over exaggerating Luz! Luz I’m being serious. It’s such a scary place. I wish I never end up in that place. Squeaky Why would you? You shouldn’t trip Luz. You ain’t no bad puppy.
Luz That don’t matter. They don’t care if you a good dog or not. Squeaky So they would just take you & put you in the pound whenever they see a dog or animal walking down the street? Luz Basically, but they mostly take animals that don’t have a home and family. Yeah, and I don’t want to be that dog they take some day.
That’s why I want tofind a new home and family.
Squeaky What you mean find a new family? You have me. We have been together showing love to each other for 2 years. Luz Yeah I know Squeaky, but what I’m tryna say is that I want to have a real family with a real home. I can’t be living in this alley behind this garbage can any longer.

Luz Didn’t you hear Mr. Pancho say that he was gonna get rid of this ugly, grimy, smelly garbage can? Squeaky No, when was this? Luz Last night. Squeaky Oh no, I don’t remember hearing him say that. Luz Well yeah, he did say that. And you know what could happen if he actually gets rid of it? Squeaky No more smelly smell? Luz What the hell Squeaky? Why can’t you at least think for once?
Squeaky What you mean? Luz If we don’t have the garbage can here in the alley, we won’t be able to hide anymore. Squeaky Hide from who Luz? I don’t understand. Luz This garbage can hides me form the animal control that passes by every morning. Without it, they’re gonna find me and take me to the pound.
You just don’t understand cuz you just a ball.
Squeaky I know I’m just a ball. Well, why don’t we go to a new alley that has a garbage can in it? Luz No, No, No Squeaky. I don’t want to live in no alley behind a garbage can any longer. I’m tired of living this way.
I want to live in a house with a family that loves me and takes care of me. Can you help me attract a family?
Squeaky Attract? How are we going to do that? Luz When a family passes by, you gonna roll up to them so they can get you and bring you to me. When I receive you, I’ma kick you and you
gonna bounce back to me and land on my nose. By the time you land, you spin on my nose and a family can actually pay attention to me.
Squeaky So what you are telling me is that I’m helping you find a family so we can move in and leave this alley forever? Luz Yes, yes, yes Squeaky. You know what I’m heading to. Squeaky So you expecting me to leave Shiny the handsome coca-cola can behind? Luz Why not? You guys ain’t even dating. Squeaky (Upset) So, that don’t matter. Just shut up and leave me alone Luz. We’ll talk later. Luz If you don’t want to help me, it’s okay. I’ll just do it by myself, I guess. Squeaky (Mad) Since when do you care about having a family that loves you and takes care of you? Luz Since my mom passed away. Don’t you remember the day I told you? I miss the love and care my mom used to give to me all the time. The sweetness and kindness I received every day and night. This ugly, stanky, nasty alley don’t give me nothing. It only brings me coldness, loneliness, sadness, and tearness. I miss the old days. I can’t be living this way any longer.
Squeaky Yes, I do remember. I’m sorry for you loss Luz, but you need to understand that I’m deeply in love with this coca cola can. Luz How you gonna do this Squeaky? How you gonna choose a can over your best friend? We have known each other for years. We have been through a lot. You barely even met this can. Just help me attract a family so I can leave and when I leave, you can stay with him as much time as you want. I really don’t care. Squeaky What you mean you really wouldn’t care? I thought we were best friends forever. Stay by each other’s side no matter what. Luz We are and I would love to stay by your side forever Squeaky, but I really wanna find a family. If you don’t want to come with me, how are we gonna do it? Cuz I ain’t stating her any longer. Squeaky Luz, how are you put me in this situation! Luz I wanna feel free; not worrying about getting caught by the animal control. I don’t want to feel worries, scared, waking up all paranoid any more. Squeaky I feel you, but Luz, you need to understand you and Shiny are the only two things I care about in this world. I don’t want to lose none of you guys. Luz (Mean face) Well I don’t care what you think. We only have til today to decide what’s going to happen. Squeaky Til today? Luz Mr. Pancho is getting rid of the garbage can tomorrow morning. Squeaky I ain’t helping you. I’m sorry. Luz What! Why?! Squeaky Cause I don’t want you to leave me. Luz Stop being selfish Squeaky and help me. Squeaky Ain’t nobody being selfish. If anything, you being the selfish one here. You only thinking about yourself. You ain’t thinking about me. Luz What you talking about? I am. If you come with me, you gonna have a new home and family also. Squeaky They might not like me. They might only end up liking you. What if I get thrown away huh? Luz Why you always have to think so negative? Why can’t you think positive for once? Squeaky Idk how you gonna do it, but I’m staying here with Shiny the can. Luz Wow! Like that? Squeaky, you hella shady. Squeaky No I ain’t. How am I shady? By me helping you, I’ma feel like my feelings for you ain’t strong enough like I say they are. Cuz I’ma be okay with you leaving my side forever. Luz Don’t feel that way. I know you love me and you care for me a lot. If anything, by you helping me I’ma feel like you really care for me and that you actually care about how I feel. Don’t you want me to be happy?
Squeaky Yes, I want you to be a happy dog; I want you to be the happiest puppy in this world Luz. Luz Then please Squeaky… Please help me. Squeaky (Stays quiet) Luz Look, help me attract a family and you can stay with Shiny. By me leaving, I’ma be happy and by you staying, you’ll be happy. Squeaky Are you sure you want it to be this way? Luz Yes, I’m 100% sure and I promise I’ll keep me word. I’ll come to visit you once in a while and hang out with you, I promise.
