Sharks by David F. Characters: SAVAGE the Shark, male, 4 years old (18 in human years). BEAST the Hammer Shark, male, 4 years old (18 in human years), his best friend Setting: Beast’s House in the Bottom of the ocean. He lives in a sunken boat. The boat is dirty, and he sees a lot of garbage everywhere, fishes and crabs, and all kind of different creatures
Time: Morning, New Year’s Day, a day before election. At Rise: SAVAGE & BEAST are swimming around.
SAVAGE Beast, I got a problem.
BEAST What’s the matter?
SAVAGE I’m trying to run the ocean– BEAST (interrupts) Then why don’t you?
SAVAGE (shocked) I can’t!
BEAST What do you mean?
SAVAGE I can’t run the ocean by myself.
BEAST You should already know about this: I hate telling anyone what to do.
SAVAGE But come on, I really need you to help me get votes, and win the election for the King of the ocean.
BEAST Why you always thinking about yourself, Dogfish? (Savage is stunned) I’m trying to win something too. Just stop thinking about ‘you’ for once.
SAVAGE Who you calling a Dogfish? Why you getting mad for?
BEAST ‘Cause you should know I don’t take no orders from no-one!
SAVAGE No one is telling you what to do, or NOT to do. Please Beast, I really need you in this! I’ll …let you run half the ocean.
BEAST I’m telling you, I don’t want to run the ocean. What I really want is a very, very-very special shark… To tell you the truth I been feeling lonely and depressed. I’m in Love with this beautiful Leopard Shark! (sees her) She looks like she need to come swim with me this way, now!
SAVAGE Are you serious?! I thought… I was there for you, you’re like a brother to me. (pause) I’m going to support you with every decision you make. If you really like that shark, why don’t you go with her?
BEAST (doubtful) Are you playing with me right now?
SAVAGE I wouldn’t be saying that right now. ‘Cause when we were little sharks, you would always have my back, with anything! That’s why I’m always going to have your fin.
BEAST (shocked) Where have YOU been at? …I thought you always think about yourself, like running the ocean, and cleaning the sea… I’m going to tell you something: I really dislike all that stuff. I really don’t like how you’re trying to change everything. I like living in the bottom of the ocean, and you’re trying to mess that up!
SAVAGE I’m not trying to mess up nothing! I’m just trying to follow in my dad’s swim-paddle. ‘Cause he ran the ocean, and he was the King of the sea. You know how my dad was a kind, caring shark! He was trying to make the sea better, and to keep everyone safe. And I’m trying to do the same thing. THAT’S why I’m trying to run the sea, not trying to mess anything up.
BEAST I never seen that side of you.
SAVAGE I’m telling you straight up, if you don’t want to help me, then it’s alright with me –BUT, if you do I’ll… I’ll let you run the Bottom of the ocean. Does that work for you?
BEAST Mmm… I don’t know.
SAVAGE It’s up to you (pause) Last chance…
SAVAGE I’ll do it! BUT there’s some things I want to add. One is, not telling me what to do…
SAVAGE And?
BEAST And… That’s all.
SAVAGE Damn, I KNEW you are cruel shark… But I still love you. Now I need to win this election! BEAST Let’s go get these votes.
