Characters:
John the Lion, male, age 15.
Martha the Lioness, female, age 30.
Setting:
In the middle of the jungle with lot’s of trees, rocks all around, lot’s of bushes and a lagoon nearby.
Time:
Dusk
At rise:
They are both talking under a tree. His mom is preparing a bit of raw meat in a normal environment.
John
Hey mom, how’s your day going? What’s there to eat?
Martha
Well, I’m good son, more or less- and there’s fresh meat. Where have you been?
John
I went with my girlfriend down to the valley for awhile to eat some fruit.
Martha
Bad son, why didn’t you bring me a bit of fruit? And, how is your girlfriend doing?
John
It’s just that I forgot mom, we only went for a little while- and she’s good mom.
Martha
Did you hear who they killed?
John
(Laughing a bit) The one who happened to be alive?
Martha
(With a serious face and crying) I’m being serious son, they killed your best friend.
John
(Flippantly) Mom, I don’t believe it. Why are you crying?
Martha
(Raising her head with tears in her eyes) John, everyday is more dangerous here and every day you run the risk of something happening to you. Lot’s of ferocious Tigers attack our own kind.
John
(With a worried and sad look on his face) Mom, I love you very much and I don’t want you to be worried or sad. I understand, but I don’t want to be apart from you.
Martha
But son, if you don’t leave tomorrow, these ferocious tigers can kill you, you already saw how they killed your best friend, I don’t want anything to happen to you.
John
He was my friend…perhaps my best friend. This damn situation that we find ourselves in, should not be taken lightly.
Martha
But, my son, I love you very much and I don’t want those ferocious Tigers to kill you.
John
But mom, I want to be with him at least one last time and you’re telling me to leave tomorrow?
Martha
I understand son that he was your best friend and you want to see him one last time, but I am sure that he loved you and wants you to be safe.
John
Yes, but what I’m getting at, mother, is that here or in any other place in the world something can happen.
Martha
But if you go to another place, you will have more life to live son.
John
Mom, I’m thinking that maybe I’m a bother to you. Why don’t you want to have me with you?
Martha
It’s not that you are a bother to me son, I just want the best for you.
John
But you tell me to leave without knowing what that country is like, you don’t know if there’s more danger over there, than here.
Martha
If I say this, it’s because I love you and I don’t want anything to happen to you here.
John
But mom, I can’t leave.
Martha
(Impatiently) Why are you telling me this son?
John
Because my girlfriend is pregnant, and I don’t want to leave her.
Martha
(Surprised) Why didn’t you tell me this before?
John
Because, today she told me she hasn’t had a period for weeks.
Martha
I don’t know what to tell you John.
John
Mom, I don’t want to leave her or you.
Martha
But, you can leave, and I can stay with her and the baby.
John
But it’s just that you don’t know mom what I feel to find out that she’s pregnant and the love that I have for my child.
Martha
I am your mother and the same thing you’re feeling, I felt when I found out that I was going to have you.
John
Mom, I don’t want to be like my dad who abandoned me, I want to be a good example to my child and always have him close to me.
Martha
John, the moon is shining more brightly, and you have not decided what to do.
John
The only thing that I want is the best for you and for her.
Martha
If I tell you all this it’s for your own good, believe me.
John
I don’t want to be away from her I love her too much, like I love you and my little brothers and sisters.
Martha
But John, I haven’t told you, I’m pregnant too and I want you to help me with the care of your little brothers and sisters.
John
My best friend had told me that, but I didn’t believe him.
Martha
And you’re not going to believe me, but it’s your best friend’s.
John
(Confused) How is this possible? I’m already hurt because they killed him and now you tell me this?
Martha
I’m going to be honest with you John, I liked him a lot and what happened just happened.
John
I just want to be with my girlfriend, it’s Just with her that I feel good in this moment.
Martha
Well John, you’ve heard my advice, now let destiny decide what’s best.
John stays with his girlfriend that he loves so much just like his mother. Regardless of what happened for him, his mom does not stop being his mom. For him the most important thing in his life is love and happiness and only his family makes him feel good and happy.
