Smokey
Dad, dad, I need to talk to you.
Jose
Son, can’t you see that I’m being passed around, and can’t talk to you right now?
Smokey
Well ya, but it is really important! Can you just listen?
Jose
Ok, what is it?
Smokey
Well, my mom is making my life miserable. I want to have fun, and with her polluting me, I can’t. I just keep waking up sick!
Jose
Smokey! I don’t want to hear this right now! I am busy!
Smokey
But, I need your help.
Jose
Why don’t you try to tell her how you feel.
Smokey
Because! She just won’t listen to me.
Jose
Well, I’m not gong to deal with this! I’m tired of hearing it!
Smokey
Dad, I just wanted you to help me, and you are my dad, you’re suppose to be here for me?
Jose
I am here for you! I just don’t want to get in between you and your mom.
Smokey
But?
Jose
No! I have been having to choose between you guys because we can never have a good time without you two arguing.
Smokey
But see, if you talk to her you won’t have to do that anymore.
Jose
You know how your mom is? And she won’t change as hard as we try. It just won’t happen.
Smokey
Well, you know you guys not listening to me just makes me feel like I’m not wanted.
Jose
Son? We love you. It’s just sometimes we need a brake.
Smokey
But mom?
Jose
I’m not you mother! If you have a problem with her, you guys need to deal with it and stop getting me involved!
Smokey
Fine! If you are going to treat me this way I will not talk to you!
(Smokey floats away.)
(Jose is talking to himself.)
Jose
Wow, I really hurt his feelings, but I’m stuck? And I don’t know what to do. There are just so many things that could happen if there is a difference. If his mom changes she won’t know what to do. She will go crazy, because all she knows is to pollute, But if Smokey and his mom get along and Smokey get better he won’t be the same little annoying part of air.
(Smokey floats in.)
Jose
Hi son I’m…
Smokey
Oh? So now you want to talk to me? Well I’m just coming to tell you…
Jose
Son wait, I have thought about it. I will ask your mom if she can slow down on polluting you just a little.
Smokey
O, ok.
Jose
When I stop being passed around I will take your mom out to a dinner and I will talk to her. Ok?
Smokey
Well, thank you dad.
Jose
But this is the last time! No more! From now on if you and her have a problem you deal with it!
(Jose roles away)
Smokey
Well, I wonder what my mom is going to tell my dad. If she’s not going to stop I will just loose it, I’m just so tired of feeling this sickness. I refuse to be depressed anymore.
(Jose rolls back, talks to himself.)
Jose
Well that’s weird my wife didn’t even listen to me. I can understand not listening to her son but her husband, what did I do? That felt like I wasn’t even talking to her. It was like it went in one ear and out the other. That hurt.
Smokey?
Smokey
Yes dad? What did she say?
Jose
Well, I don’t think you are going to have much luck feeling better. She didn’t listen to me! She won’t listen to you and she’s not going to change!
Smokey
Well, dad it’s hard for me to say this, but I have to go find a place where I don’t feel like I’m sick and mistreated anymore. I will be back to visit when I get my self feeling better, but just remember it wasn’t your fault. I will always love you.
Jose
Son, wait! Please don’t go I tried my best, I’m sure we can do something else. I don’t want to lose you. You’re my only son. I don’t know what I would do if you weren’t here. You bug me but I still love you.
Smokey
No, dad nothing else will work. We all ready tried, I have to go but I will be back, I just need a break.
Jose
Well? Ok, I will see you when you come back.
(Smokey leaves.)
(Jose talks to himself.)
Wow! I just let my son float away. What is wrong with me! I mean I tried talking to his mom to stop. But she didn’t listen, I guess I am just going to have to wait until he comes back. Ya, I will be worried about him, but I’m sure he will be ok. What will his mother say when I tell her he’s gone. I hope she doesn’t just blow it off. We need to work on it so we can get him back when he comes to visit.
