The New Beginning

Characters:
FAMOUS, the Grizzly Bear, male, 13 years
CAUTIOUS, the Panda Bear, male, 12 years
Setting:
On a broken path in the Plaza Rock Woods. Around are a lot of fallen trees, tree stumps and near the end of the path, a big, dirty lake. Dried, almost dead trees.
Time:
3pm, bright, sunny day.
At rise:
CAUTIOUS is sitting on a stump looking into the sky thinking about what to do. FAMOUS thug walks and snaps him out of his thoughts. He walks like he has three legs when he really has four.
FAMOUS
What up cuz
CAUTIOUS
Whats poppin Cuzzo
FAMOUS
You good. It look like you got somin’ on your mind.
CAUTIOUS
Yea man I been meaning to roar to you about a real spill.
FAMOUS
LOL that’s crazy because I been wanting to talk to you too.
CAUTIOUS
Well wassup what on yo pumpkin
FAMOUS
Nah, yours might be more important, so you go ahead and spill.
CAUTIOUS
Are you sure – it looks like its something heavy on your mind too.
FAMOUS
Yea man be my guest. Mine isn’t all that.
CAUTIOUS
Well Aite I’ve been thinking . . . well – ugh – just forget it man, it ain’t that important.
FAMOUS
Man I have never seen you like this. Something is going on, talk to me man.
CAUTIOUS
Well its just that, man its getting close to pretty much extermination.
FAMOUS
What are you talking about – It ain’t getting bad.
CAUTIOUS
Think about it man remember how we used to play around here with all the other cubs?
FAMOUS
Yea, so what are you getting to?
CAUTIOUS
Nothing really but look around man where are they now?
(FAMOUS and CAUTIOUS look around.)
FAMOUS
I never thought about that man. Bears are disappearing around here.
CAUTIOUS
Man exactly, and I bet you don’t even know what happened to them.
FAMOUS
Nah I don’t. What happened?
CAUTIOUS
They have been trophied!
FAMOUS
Trophied? What do you mean trophied?
CAUTIOUS
The hunters came and turned them into trophies.
FAMOUS
What is the wood coming to –
CAUTIOUS
Nothing and that’s exactly my point that what I’ve been thinking and . . .
FAMOUS
– and what?
CAUTIOUS
– and am planning on getting out of here before I become a trophy.
FAMOUS
Then just move. Duh.
CAUTIOUS
It ain’t that easy man I need a little more honey to move to a new tree.
FAMOUS
So how much honey are we talking about because I ain’t a rich bear.
CAUTIOUS
About three cups worth but I have a cup already.
FAMOUS
Man me too I only got a cup.
CAUTIOUS
So do you want to help me make some honey? We only need a cup.
FAMOUS
How we gonna do that?
CAUTIOUS
I’ve been plotting on this corner tree we could take the fruit and sell it to the other bears
FAMOUS
Are you stupid? That will turn you into a trophy real quick – you trippin’.
(CAUTIOUS thinks his cousin doesn’t want to be with him anymore after he told FAMOUS about him stealing.)
CAUTIOUS
Well, if I don’t I’m be a trophy anyway.
FAMOUS
Well that sucks because I was planning on coming back anyway.
CAUTIOUS
Nah, man that is dangerous – how about you just move with me.
FAMOUS
But we aren’t for certain we’ll even make the balance –
CAUTIOUS
Well if we don’t try something, we both gonna be trophies.
FAMOUS
Alright well I’m with you. I’ll help you but I don’t know if I’m gonna move in with you. I will miss my parents way too much.
CAUTIOUS
Nah man it ain’t no point of me doing this if you ain’t gonna come with me.
FAMOUS
Nah man it don’t matter don’t stop your dream because of something that I’m doing.
CAUTIOUS
You are my road bear – I can’t just leave you out here and I move on.
FAMOUS
It’s not about what you can’t do. I already gave you my answer so lets go make that honey.
(They go to the corner tree and steal and sell the fruit.)
(CAUTIOUS and FAMOUS ad lib: “We got that fruit, right here” . . . etc.)
CAUTIOUS
I can’t believe we have the whole cup man, lets get that new tree.
FAMOUS
Nah man what I said was final – now we are gonna have to go our separate ways.
CAUTIOUS
I can’t just leave you out here man I don’t want to hear you’re gone.
FAMOUS
I’ma be alright man. You go on and follow your dream and I’ma follow mine, if faith wants us together then indeed it will happen.
CAUTIOUS
Forget it then man – I can’t just walk away like that – we are going to have to get trophied together.
FAMOUS
I appreciate what you are tryna do but hey man I’m the big cousin and I don’t want to tell your Big Bro what you’re planning on doing – now go on –
CAUTIOUS
Alright man I love you Cuzzo
FAMOUS
I love you too lil cuz –
(They hug for a while.)
CAUTIOUS
Man be safe out there
FAMOUS
Nah I’ma be careful because safes get broken into. But remember what I said – if faith wants us together then it will happen so just wait on it.
THE END
MONOLOGUE – FAMOUS, THE GRIZZLY BEAR
Getting ready for my day it’s like 11:00am. I stretch and take a big shake and dust off my fur. Now that I’m ready to go meet my cousin. (He walks to the log stop at the river and wait for the log to come – watching the stream flow.) The log would be here in ten minutes. I hate catching the log back to my parents tree everyday – I wish I could just live with them again. I just want to be unified with my family again. I don’t want to have to travel so far to meet up with my friends. I want to move back to my parents tree but I would not be able to move freely due to the fact that the placement I am at would put out an All Bear Hunter for return or they could even kill me if I permanently left the placement. Stuck in between thoughts – I can’t wait to meet my cousin so I can talk to him about what I should do.
(Getting on the log. A vulture flew over and FAMOUS gives the vulture a note to give to his cousin.) Tell my cousin that I am on my way.
What is he gonna think about my decision, is he going to support me or is he going to be mad at me? Will he go tell momma and papa bear or will he keep this between us? If he says I should stay and wait, will I forget about his opinion and do what I want? All these thoughts roaming through my brain made me feel as if I was gonna let off a big roar? (Snapping out of thoughts) I see how wet my butt is and I seen that I needed to switch logs. (Looking at the stream) My next log should be here in two minutes –
(After waiting and getting on the log, he arrives in his cousin’s and parents’ wood.)
MONOLOGUE – CAUTIOUS, THE PANDA BEAR
Here I am on this rugged path – as I get older I am starting to realize that there is nothing in the wood for me other than a bad upcoming future. Seeing that all my neighborwood friends are being captured by the hunters I’m scared that I could be next. I really don’t want to become a part of the statistics. Knowing that I’m funning out of time due to the fact of the other neighborwood bears are starting to disappear and I could be next at any time, I have to find a way to get my hone yp. Not just get it up but I have to get it fast if I want to make it out of the wood, fast earning my goal of being trophy free. I went to the local corner trees to figure out a tactic to steal fruit and sell it to the local bears in the community for honey. After I figured out how I was going to do it, plenty of thoughts started roaming through my head. If I get caught what is going to happen to me? Will the hunters turn me into the trophy that I never wanted to be? Will I get away with the crime I committed? As I run for my dear life will local witnesses describe me and then an All Bear Hunter be put out for my capture? As these thoughts roamed through my brain it made me worry more of my greatest fear. I would become a trophy of which the hunters wanted. Although I was extremely scared of that, the route on which I was going, it was bound to happen sooner or later. If I didn’t fulfill the honey requirement for the new tree out of the wood, I would eventually be a trophy anyway.
(Vulture flies over. Vulture dropped note. Notes dropped on CAUTIOUS’ head.)
AS I read the note it says that my cousin is on his way. With all that’s going on I forgot about my cousin’s daily arrival to the wood. What m I going to do about telling my cousin what I’m planning to do? With him not knowing that I steal to make honey, I can’t just try to get him to help. Is he going to help me get out of the wood before the hunters get me? Will he leave me to proceed on my plans and not help? Should I tell him of my fear? I’m so scared and stuck that I don’t know what to do – (Taking a deep breath) I smelt the scent of FAMOUS and instantly changed my mood – know that he would be full of questions –
