by Jeremiah
CHARACTERS:

Atlantic, the Ocean, 500,000 years old, male
SETTING: The sun is shining bright. The ocean is filthy with trash and garbage. A lot of dead fishes and other sea animals. The ocean is green from all the things people on the beach throwing huge amounts of trash and garbage in the ocean.
TIME: It’s 11:00 in the morning.
AT RISE: Fearest is waving while the strong wind blows on him. Atlantic is looking at Fearest and all the trash going into him from the beach.
ATLANTIC
Woah. That’s a lot of trash. (Whispers under his breath) I’d hate to be you.
FEAREST
(Sighing) I know.
ATLANTIC
I didn’t mean it like that.
FEAREST
I know, it’s okay, but wassup with you today?
ATLANTIC
Nothing. We do the same thing everyday. Don’t you ever think about leaving and going somewhere?
FEAREST
Like where?
ATLANTIC
I don’t know…Everywhere.
FEAREST
(Sighing) Yeah, I guess.
ATLANTIC
Why you seem so depressed today, Fearest? You okay?
FEAREST
It’s nothing. (Fearest pauses for a second and says, smiling). You see that beautiful ocean over there?
ATLANTIC
Yeah, what about her?
FEAREST
(Smiling) I want her to be mine…(sad) but she not going to like me if I’m like this.
ATLANTIC
Like what?
FEAREST
(Sad) you know…dirty.
ATLANTIC
Oh yeah. She’s too clean for you anyway. (Laughs out loud)
FEAREST
Shut up,Act. That’s why I had a talk with the humans and they said they were going to clean me (smiling) and once I’m cleaned I’m going to be with the beautiful ocean and start a family.
ATLANTIC
(Scared) Really? When?
FEAREST
Soon—I can’t wait to get this filth out of me.
ATLANTIC
(Sighing) I bet.
FEAREST
(Looks at Atlantic) What’s wrong? Aren’t you glad I’m getting cleaned soon?
ATLANTIC
Yeah…but…
FEAREST
Ok good because I’m going to need your help.
ATLANTIC
With what?
FEAREST
(Sad) you know…dirty.
ATLANTIC
Oh yeah. She’s too clean for you anyway. (Laughs out loud)
FEAREST
Shut up,Act. That’s why I had a talk with the humans and they said they were going to clean me (smiling) and once I’m cleaned I’m going to be with the beautiful ocean and start a family.
ATLANTIC
(Scared) Really? When?
FEAREST
Soon—I can’t wait to get this filth out of me.
ATLANTIC
(Sighing) I bet.
FEAREST
(Looks at Atlantic) What’s wrong? Aren’t you glad I’m getting cleaned soon?
ATLANTIC
Yeah…but…
FEAREST
Ok good because I’m going to need your help.
ATLANTIC
With what?
FEAREST
Part of the deal with the humans were for them to clean me, they need fish…and I told them that you can give them fishes. And they’re building a wall after.
ATLANTIC
(Pauses for a sec) I can’t…
FEAREST
(Disappointed) What? Why you can’t?
ATLANTIC
Because I—I need you.
FEAREST
Umm…what are you talking about?
ATLANTIC
I want to leave—I want to leave with you. We’ve been here doing the same stuff decade after decade and I want us to leave and explore the world. I feel like we’re trapped here and leaving means freedom. Leaving will give me joy, and to see what the world has to offer and throw at us. And if you don’t come I won’t have as much fun with you.
(Fearest hears him but doesn’t respond yet)
ATLANTIC
I need you to help me leave before the humans put the wall up and we’ll be stuck here even longer. This situation makes me feel concerned and frustrated because you’re going to get distracted by the female ocean and leave me, and make me go alone. I’m afraid other oceans is going to try and pick on me and I’m not going to be able to make new friends. You’re my only friend and everyone’s afraid of you, not me. Just like you saved me when we were younger, I owe you.
FEAREST
I—I didn’t know you felt that way Atlantic. I know you feel you owe me and stuff, but you don’t. I just want a girlfriend, and my own family, Act. I don’t have a relationship with my mom and dad because they’re on the land and in space. And I want a ocean family and have a relationship with them. But I need your help to get me cleaned, please. This situation makes me feel horrible because I know if I go with her you’re going to be lonely and probably get bullied. But you’re a grown ocean now, Act. I can’t be fighting your battles forever. You’re bigger and stronger now. You’re going to have to stand up for yourself and stand over a ocean.
(Atlantic is shook and doesn’t say anything)
FEAREST
The humans are coming to clean me today and they said it’s going to take them a week. The beautiful ocean is leaving in a week or two and I’m going with her.
ATLANTIC
I hear you…I understand you do need a family and I need to stick up for myself. (Smiling) I’m going to help you Fearest
FEAREST
Really? Are you serious Act?
ATLANTIC
Yeah. I see how much she means to you and I rather you be happy.
FEAREST
Where will you go?
ATLANTIC
I’ll just go on my own and try to have fun.
FEAREST
(Pause for a second) She probably has other female friends. I can put you on with one of them.
ATLANTIC
They probably won’t like me. It’s okay.
FEAREST
Sure they will. Look at you.
ATLANTIC
No—no, that’s not my dream. I want to explore the world. I’ll see you around Fear. (Atlantic leaves)
FEAREST
Wait—no wait. Act, come back.
(He doesn’t come back)
(Sad, to himself) He’s really gone
