JOSE
Wassup

DODGE
What you doin?

JOSE
Watching t.v.

DODGE
Could you turn that off?

JOSE
Why?

DODGE
I need to ask you something.

JOSE
Aite

DODGE
Ay Jose, what do you think if I get into another race?

JOSE
You should do it.

DODGE
But it’s not like any other of the races I’ve been in tho.

JOSE
What do you mean?

DODGE
I mean I’m not going to race the same type of cars I’ve always been racing. These are REAL racecars.

JOSE
Why? What’s the matter with the other cars you race?

DODGE
I want a real competition. You know how fast I could get if I really tried.

JOSE
Umm…Alright then let’s do it. I’ma help you.

DODGE
Fasho.
(2 days later. They’re at the racetrack)

JOSE
Alright, what you’re going to do is go around the track 10 times.

DODGE
For what? That’s just a waste of time. What we NEED to do is go back to the shop and work up my engine.

JOSE
Trust me, I know what I’m doing.

DODGE
That’s not going to help me.

JOSE
Do you want me to help you?

DODGE
Yeah

JOSE
Then do them.

DODGE
Aite. (To himself): Man…Jose is trippin. How the __________ is doing laps gona help me get faster? That doesn’t make sense. I think he’s wasting my time on purpose but I don’t know why. I’ma just tell him I don’t want his help anymore.
(Day before the race. At the auto shop)

DODGE
Jose, could you sit down? I need to tell you something.

JOSE
What’s the matter?

DODGE
Don’t get mad but I don’t want your help anymore. I just think it’s a good idea that I get ready for this race by myself.

JOSE
Why?

DODGE
Cuz you’re not helping. The whole time we’ve been preparing you’ve just been wasting my time.

JOSE
I’m just trying to look out for you.

DODGE
It doesn’t feel that way. D you not want me to be in the race?

JOSE
Well, I did at first, but now I don’t want you to anymore.

DODGE
Why not?

JOSE
I just don’t want your engine to blow.

DODGE
It’s not going to blow. Why would you think that?

JOSE
Because I’ve seen it happen before.

DODGE
It’s not going to happen to me tho.

JOSE
How do you know that?

DODGE
Because I know.

JOSE
Trust me I know what I’m talking about. I’ve worked with so many cars that thought they could have pushed themselves further and end up having their engine blow up.

DODGE
If you’ve seen this happen before why did you agree to help me?

JOSE
Because I wanted to help you before but now I take it back. It’s not that I didn’t want to help you, it’s just that I don’t want anything to happen.
(pause)
You know what, if you want to do it go ahead. I don’t care anymore.

DODGE
JOSE, this race is really important to me. I’ve never pushed myself this far before. I thought out of anybody you would have had my back but you don’t. I understand why you’re scared but this is something I’m going to have to decide for myself.

The End.
