Description: The search for a father
CHARACTERS: Small the White Diamond, Male 15 years old.
Curious the Rat, Male 16 years old.
(Small’s Brother.)
SETTING: A big wall in front of a Palace. Off to the side by a small hole in the wall.
TIME: 10 minutes before the royal crowning ceremony @ sun down.
AT RISE: Diamond and Rat are sitting at the hole in the wall at the Palace.
Diamond
We finally made it with 10 minutes to spare.
(Small rolls off Curious back)
Diamond
Thanks for the ride bro. I couldn’t have made it without You.
Rat
(Sad) Um, I’m sorry to tell you this, but I have to go my own way.
Diamond
(Confused) What?
Rat
Yeah, I’m sorry brother, but I am looking for my father too
and sun down is getting closer and closer.
Diamond
But how will you see without me? You need me just as much
as I need you.
Rat
I don’t need you. I can see perfectly.
Diamond
You crashed into a tree last week that was four inches away from you.
Rat
That doesn’t matter. I need to find my dad.
Diamond
I need you. You are my legs just like I am your eyes. We are incomplete without each other. Please don’t go. I don’t want you to get hurt without me being there. I’ll feel guilty for the rest of my life if anything happens to you.
Rat
Don’t be. I will be fine on my own.
Diamond
But what about me?
Rat
I miss my father. I’ve never had that father figure. This is my chance to fill this gap in my heart.
Diamond
What about me?
Rat
(Slamming his little paws to the floor) I’m tired of this favoritism. Everyone always chooses you over me just because you think you are so perfect.
Diamond
(Grinning) You think I’m perfect? Awww.
Rat
That’s not important right now. I need to find my dad.
Diamond
I can’t believe you think I’m perfect? (Shaking his head) I’m far from perfect. I am so imperfect. I have a hidden crack that no one knows about.
Rat
(Shocked) Is that true?
Diamond
Yes. I would not make it up.
Rat
But that never stops you from getting all that attention. Everyone expects me to take care of you when something’s wrong. It’s been like this for 5 years now. Do you know what kind of pressure that is?
Diamond
Probably a lot. I’m sorry. I had no idea that you felt like this. But rat, we don’t have much time left. You gotta help me brother.
Rat
No! I’m sorry but I can’t. I…I just can’t. I refuse to miss this opportunity. I have been waiting my whole life. This could be really be my last chance to actually see my dad and try to spend time with him. I know he misses me. I know it.
Diamond
But what if you can’t find him? There are millions of rats in that Palace.
Rat
Well, I could try! I didn’t come on this journey for Nothing.
Diamond
So you tricked me into thinking that you were going all the way with me and now your crossing me? I thought we were family.
Rat
In case your haven’t noticed, you and I are very different.
Diamond
But we’re still family.
Rat
No we aren’t. The only thing keeping us together is our mother stream.
(Big clock ringing one-minute warning-bing bang bing bang)
Diamond
Curious, brother, we are running out of time. You gotta help me first. If you trust me, I will help you find your father once as soon as I get put into my rightful place.
Rat
How do I know you are not tricking me huh?
Diamond
Because I care so much about you. You may not know this, but I’ve always looked up to you. Your will is so strong and I envy that.
Rat
Do you really mean that?
Diamond
Yes, of course. I love you Curious. You have really been good to me these last five years.
Rat
(Tearing Up) Thanks brother. I love you to Smalls and I trust you. I will help you. Will you forgive me?
Diamond
It is I who needs your forgiveness. Well never mind this. We must go now. We still got time.
Rat
Come on brother smalls the white diamond. We got a crown to get to.
