Triffe Livin’ By Ismael
CHARACTERS: Goon the Raccoon, male, 18 years old Taz the Tasmanian Devil, male, 18 years old
SETTING: In a dark old house. The floors creek as you walk over them. The windows rattle with the breeze. There are lots of rooms and closets, which gives an uneasy feeling that somebody might jump out of nowhere.
TIME: 12:45 AM on a summer night.
AT RISE: Goon jumping into a room in the hallway, acting real sketchy with a murderous look in his eye. Taz is running through a closet trying not to make it noticeable that he’s paying close attention to Goon’s behavior.
TAZ (Whispering) Goon! What’s wrong with you, man? Why you actin’ so funny?
GOON (To himself) Man, they got all these rooms up in here. There’s no tellin’ where dude is at. (Whispering to Taz) What you talkin’ about man? I’m lookin’ for the good stuff.
TAZ (Whispering) If that’s the case, then why you jumpin’ in rooms the same way the police do on Cops when they about to get somebody?
GOON (To himself) Am I really makin’ it that much noticeable? The hell with it. I’m done tryin’ to keep my true intentions in. Better to tell him now than later. (Whispering to Taz) I’m lookin’ for the dude that killed my family. And when I find him, he’s gonna wish it was the police runnin’ in and not me.
TAZ (whispering) What are you tryin’ to say, man? This ain’t part of the plan. What do you plan on doin’ once you find him?
GOON (his voice start to pick up) What do you think fool? The exact same thing he did to my family. To hell with the plan. This IS the plan!
TAZ (to himself) This fool is trippin’ and has gone too far. I’m not gonna let some square suffer for my actions. (To Goon) You can’t do that!
GOON Why the hell not? You just watch and see.
TAZ I won’t let you and I’m not about to explain, make a scene, or pour my heart out like some damn novella.
GOON The way you actin’, this might as well be a novella. This is real life. People get hurt. It’s a dog eat dog world and I’d like to see you stop me.
TAZ Just let it go, man.
GOON Taz, you actin’ real suspect right now. I’ve known you for so long. My family took care of you, fed you when you were in need. The dude is in this house and I have a chance to get at him and you gonna try and STOP me? Why?
TAZ (Yells with a bang) Because I’m the one that got your family killed!
(Goon is at a loss for words. Anger fills him. He’s so taken by it, he just attacks Taz. While they’re tussling around, they make lots of noises and wake the dude up. He comes out with the dogs. Dogs being Goon’s greatest fear, Goon flees the house followed by Taz. They split in separate directions once they hit the street.)
(Two days later, Goon and Taz are walking down separate streets)
GOON (to himself) I know there’s a lot more than to what he just told me. Your best friend wouldn’t kill your family for no reason. Maybe it was an accident and I should have let him explain himself.
TAZ (to himself) I’m paranoid and trippin’ right now. These past two days I ain’t been able to sleep right. I feel like I gotta watch my back every second of the day. The way Goon just got off on me, I know he’s after me. He didn’t even let me explain myself. In his mind, ain’t no tellin’ what he’s thinkin’ I did.
GOON (Sees Taz walking down the street so decides to run up to him to discuss the matter. Yells) Hey Taz!
TAZ (daydreaming, staring at a black squirrel girl named Cookie, he is startled. Turns around and pushes Goon into the street. Yells) I ain’t gonna let you get to me! It was an accident!
GOON (while stumbling onto the street, voice raised but not yelling) What’s wrong with you? I ain’t tryin’ to get at you! I’m trying to talk to you!
(At that moment, he gets hit by a car. Taz runs up to Goon while he’s laid out on the street.)
GOON (in a loud whisper) I just came down here to find out what really happened.
TAZ (Weeping as he’s talking with a high voice) It was an accident! I was distracted by Cookie and accidentally stumbled into the street while a car was coming by. The car swerved around me but ended up hitting your family. I’m sorry man. I really am.
GOON Why didn’t you tell me? I got love for you and I would have forgiven you if you’d have kept it one hundred with me. But it’s too late for that now. You should have known I wouldn’t smack you for that. But now gone take me out the same way you took my family out? You a sucka!
(He dies)
TAZ Goon! Goon! (Keeps calling him until he’s screaming) Ma bad!! Ma dude!! I didn’t mean for it to turn out like this. I didn’t try to take you or your family out. I really didn’t! Goon!!
