When Pluto Shines as a Sun A Play By Hunter
CHARACTERS: Out of Reach, “Pluto” Male, 17,000 years old.
The Optimistic Sun, Male, 4,600,000,000 years old
SETTING: In the galaxy revolving around the sun. There are planets, asteroids, dust, and stars twinkling at night. The sound of meteorites firing by, asteroids flying everywhere, and shooting stars wishing away!
TIME: 9:00 PM on a gravitational day.
AT RISE: Pluto is floating and revolving closer and closer to his family. So far away at first, we’ll come together at the end.
PLUTO
I was away… Too far away … Tired and been praying to the Satellite, hoping my prayers are answered.
SUN
Hold up… What are you talking about? What did you pray for?
PLUTO
To come closer to my family, my solar system but I have planets in my way, obstacles I have to overcome, and meteorites I am trying to dodge when it come my way.
SUN
I tried to help but you didn’t care. I vented my energy source but you didn’t listen. You pushed yourself away so now you’re no longer in sight. You seem to need help Pluto but maybe it’s too late to change now. I tried to help you!
PLUTO
How did you try to help me? You don’t want anybody as bright as you, Sun! You wanted to control me, make my decisions, and limit the success that awaited me in the future. Instead you neglected your energy source toward me…
SUN
(Interrupts) I neglected you? Me, helping you deferred what I wanted to do in life. You blocked the light that shine. We are like a solar eclipse.
PLUTO
You’ve never cared for me. I never had that role model to help me twinkle. I’m fuming right now. Burning that you don’t want to help me!
SUN
(Laughs) I can’t help you if you don’t want to help yourself. What do you have in mind?
PLUTO
I want to be a shooting star playing for the Galaxy 49ers. If it doesn’t happen now then maybe it’ll only be a dream that didn’t come true.
SUN
To tell you the truth! I doubt that your dream would happen and you’ll explode and end up so far away that I won’t be able to see you. You’ll be considered dust!
PLUTO
I know deep down in your inner-core you think I’m using you but I need just light at the bottom of my stratosphere to guide me to safety and warmth. It’s a black hole where I am.
The temperature is low, barely any oxygen to breathe and the gravitational force that’s in my heart is so low, I don’t know when the satellite is calling me home.
SUN
You’ve used me before. How can I trust you?
PLUTO
I know we are like fire and water but deep down, as a brother, I’ll always love you whether I revolve around your life or not. You’re successful, you’re shining, and not one day go by and me wishing I was you.
SUN
You could never accomplish what I’ve done.
PLUTO
That’s what I’m talking about. You can’t even shine bright enough to support me. You’re blood! You’re inconsiderate of others and don’t want to help me come to my senses and be in reach of other planets in the galaxy.
SUN
Maybe you don’t deserve it.
PLUTO
You’re right, I don’t. But since the opportunity is in my grasp then maybe it’s worth giving it effort because there won’t be another time. Like baseball, I got two strikes fighting not to strike out. You’re outer layer shows hatred but the area and mass around your inner core. I know you care but you’ve got this wall up not wanting others to get over on you again. I understand and I’m sorry.
SUN
Look Pluto…
(Pluto interrupts.)
PLUTO
No look brother, like clouds receive energy from stars within. I need too that energy from you, Sun. There’s no doubt in my mind that you launched and Astronaut to see how I was doing, I appreciate that. All I ask is forgiveness and maybe we can work on bettering ourselves for our own benefits instead of thinking were using each other.
SUN
Something insides me telling me since you’re locked up and away from me on the dark side, maybe you’re just speaking but not acting because that’s what you do when all you have is time. That’s all you really have on the dark side, time.
PLUTO
You don’t have to believe me…
SUN
How am I supposed to believe you?
PLUTO
Sooner or later, people start to realize that all it takes is one mistake to throw away your life and I’m in that predicament now. Maybe, I won’t see any light anytime soon but I want to know if I still will have your energy source to get through my most difficult times. You don’t have to believe me but over time you’ll learn to trust me.
SUN
I will, but don’t doubt the love that I have for you. I’m just worried about you, that is it!
PLUTO
With the life I’m leading, I don’t blame you. The sound of explosions, deep down in your chromospheres, you hope it wasn’t me that got hit. As a big brother, you have to worry because all these gases affect a lot of us.
SUN
Just take care of yourself and continue to better yourself. No doubt in my mind that you’ll make it. I know I always be in control but you’re grown and can take responsibility for yourself.
PLUTO
Maybe I need your structure but sometimes you be too demanding. Like when my ex-girl, Mercury, came over. The heat we shared, not even scientists could measure our temperature.
Sun laughs out loud! 🙂
SUN
Maybe you can’t mess with anyone as hot as her. She is probably burning anyway since she is worldwide.
PLUTO
That’s maybe what I need to lift my temperature.
SUN
I don’t need another planet in my galaxy, I’m stressing with mine.
PLUTO
I’ll keep that in mind, but remember…They recite together.
SUN & PLUTO
That I’m looking forward to the sun rising on a new day.
SUN
And don’t forget about Mercury burning. Maybe you should test her temperature for small rocks forming near her core.
PLUTO
Will do! Thanks brother. Today is a good day.
SUN
Make a wish. A shooting star!
PLUTO
No need to. It came true already.
SUN
